No taste water bottle

Tupperware, and the like, doesn't have any taste. There must
be some reason why bottle mfgrs don't use that stuff.

Egads! The absolute strongest plastic flavor is found in store-
bought bottled water, except gallon containers and certain
brands of quart/liter bottles. I can't stand 24 oz bottles
of store-bought water...

Must be individual flavor sensitivities. The icky taste in
most PETE and HDPE bottles is so strong that I really can't
stand it, and I can't understand why anybody would drink
that water. OTOH, I use hot water and dish soap to rinse
brand new cycling bottles and don't notice a flavor later;
and I even recently used one with no pre-rinsing whatsoever
and it tasted fine.

How about the gallon jugs? I'm pretty sure those are LDPE,
and I've never heard anybody complain about plastic flavor.
Why doesn't anybody make small bottles out of that? It seems
like, given the shape commonly used for small bottles, it
would be sufficiently stiff; and maybe given the shape and
thickness of cycling bottles, it would feel right for that.

the thing is you need a harder plastic to keep from tasting.
that makes the bottle harder to squeeze.

Heh..I was really talking about store-bought water there.

I just checked a random cycling bottle and it is LDPE.

I checked a Poland Spring gallon jug and was surprised to
find that it's HDPE.

So, why do I find such a strong awful taste in a 24 oz HDPE
bottle, but the gallon seems to have none of that taste
whatsoever? Maybe it's something about the way they're
manufactured, or maybe something added that makes the little
bottles clear, but isn't added to the translucent gallon
jugs. Maybe dilution; I guess I could figure the surface
area of the two bottles and compare to their water
content...

This works, but be careful you don't get algae or other
stuff growing in there while it's sitting around. Also, I'm
told that putting a little baking soda in the water will
help. Running the bottles through the dishwasher a couple of
times works too.

Yes, the ones not made out of plastic. 🙂 I think Sig makes
them out of aluminum. You might also try cleaning out your
bottles before you use them. I usually add a teaspoon of
bleach to a full bottle and let it sit overnight. That
usually works for me.

LDPE, the cloudy-looking, slightly waxy-feeling plastic that
is used for milk jugs, leaves a distinct taste in water IMO.

PETE, the transparent shiny stuff used for soda water and
mineral water, has no taste I can discern.

If I were concerned about funny-tasting water in the bottle
on my bike, I'd probably buy a liter of tonic water and mix
a bunch of gin-and-tonics until the bottle was empty. At
that point I wouldn't be able to taste anything funny about
water that I put in the bottle, and I'd need the liquid
replenishment.

24 oz Gatorade bottles with the solid plastic nipple. I get
a six-pack every couple years, use the Gatorade and keep
them until they practically disintigrate.

A little Chlorox rinse every so often doesn't hurt...
