i have a $7 kick stand from sprawl-mart. i had to go with unpainted as they were out of the purple ones.

i doubt i'll ever get to the point where the weight of a kickstand adversely affects my speed. i'd imagine shaving all the hair off my (exposed) body parts would gain me more speed than removing the kickstand.

[font=Tms Rmn][font=Arial]I use a kickstands on my Trek and WorldSport but not on my Felt. I use the Trek for fairly short stop and go rides to the store, winery, friends and so forth and the kickstand works great for those situations, on and off the bike and not always having a tree or something to lean your bike against. The WorldSport came with a kickstand and I used that bike in the city riding for many years and the kickstand works well for that, so I used it. But for training rides or social rides I don't use the kick stand. You are (hopefully) on the bike for the entire ride and just don't need the kickstand. I took the kickstand off my road bike.[/font][/font]

None of my bikes have them. I wouldn't want to carry the extra weight for something that is only useful when I'm not riding the bike.

When I'm not riding there is always a tree, fence post or wall to lean my bike on. If I'm riding with others it's easy enough to lean bikes against each other.

I ride for the workout so the weight of the bike is not a major factor. So I do have a kick stand.

I introduced a friend of mine to biking and sent him down to my LBS to get fitted for a bike. While he was going through the process, he noticed the bike didn't have a kickstand.

So he asked the rep to put one on the bike when it came in. The rep at my LBS gave several reasons to not put one on... extra unecessary cost, extra weight, and so on. My friend was persistent, so he was given the last ditch answer. "It just isn't cool." 😄

To paraphrase my friend's response, he just laughed and said, "If I wanted cool, I'd buy and customize a Harley. In the meantime, put the kickstand on." I was rollin'.

There is a man who knows what he wants and doesnt care what other people say about it... I wish I was there to hear him say that cause it must have been classic...

I bet the bike shop rep has been re-telling this story ever since.

The funniest reason I ever seen for not having a kisckstand: About six years ago at a downhill race, a citizen racer (most likely his first race and had wanted to check out all the fuss) entered with a Huffy something-or-other. It had this monstrous suspension fork on the front which looked like it had one inch of travel that was bolstered by this spring underneath the headtube 😕 . Anyway to make a long story short, the DH course was covered with tree roots that crossed the course creating a really crazy washboard effect, and during this racer's run, the kickstand came down and stuck in the ground on a corner after which the bike promptly threw him over the bars into the bushes. He wasn't injured, other than pride (hence the funny reason) and decided not to go for his second run.

This is one of the legitimate reasons I thought of for not having a kick stand....

I think its kind of funny with all the angst about how to improve your speed / distance that one would have a problem with having the weight of a kickstand on their bike...

I decided to do a little expirement.... I did the same short route today six times... three with my kickstand on and three with it off... and I came up with this result....

the average of each of the three speeds are this

with kickstand 0:10:45.592
w/out kickstand 0:10:44.627

that's it.... I am leaving the kickstand off!!!!!!!
