  1. Hi,
I am a tourist from Canada. I independently tour on a bike which means I spend a lot of time wild or stealth camping.

I just came back from a trip to Southwest England and Wales. In Canada my major concern is bears. No one told me about brambles! It seems everywhere I camped, I was surrounded by these scratchy, itchy bushes. What are brambles and how can I lessen my esposure to them. These things are as bad as mosquitos!

I'm touring the Thames from its' source next time. How can I manage the brambles?

I don't know what you are beefing about. Simply travel in August and eat the fruit of the brambles aka blackberries. It makes the sctratches more bearable. Try some lochside camping in Scotland to experience the misery induced by midges they pack a bigger punch per milligram than mosquitoes.....

Luckily it was cool and I was wearing long sleeves and pants so I didn't have any real damage. I'll keep that in mind in case I come back in the summer.

My friend Jonathan was touring in Scotland in the summer and told me about the midges. What is their season?

  4. Brambles are nothing compared to barbed wire! I hate the stuff - what on earth is it doing in our countryside it isn't a war zone!

The barbed wire is in its intended environment serving its intended purpose. It was invented to contain livestock. The military, as always, found an alternative use for a peacetime product.

You are quite correct in your assertion that the fields are not war zones though 😄

  6. I don't agree - a cow would not be able to get out of an ordinary wired fence or a sheep! A farm worker once told me that farmers recieve a subsidy for using barbed wire - anyone know if this is true or not?

I have seen a dead owl hanging from barbed wire fencing by his foot, dogs ripped to shreads...it's horrible stuff arghhhh😠
