I don't believe that there is anything OLN can do. Last year when I checked I was told that OLN only
had time delayed rights for specific weekend days.

I believe that is how the broadcast rights were sold, in pieces (by the stage). Don't be surprised
if they also have other primo stages.

I already emailed them a few days ago. I got this reply within a half an hour from some guy
named George:

"As was the case the last two years with our coverage, we have to honor our contract, which allows
CBS to have the first shot to air coverage of the races on Sunday. Even though they don't air live
coverage, we have to wait until 8pm to show ours for the last three (7/13, 7/20 and 7/27) Sundays.
We will have live audio on the website, however, and will be negotiating a new contract with CBS for
future Tours."

He ignored my question about Saturday live coverage. This was discussed during the Giro coverage
too, and someone suggested most cyclist were out riding on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I guess OLN
doesn't want to spend money broadcasting to VCRs that cut out commercials.

as in the past CBS will hide key stages like d'Huez and the last stage in the mess that is sports
sunday.... little bits of the stage hidden between long pieces of golf and off season figure
skating.. BAH.

calgary or Albertville. With those goobers from the CBS morning show and their 'up close and
personal' profiles. i think they helped pave the way for the dreck that is NBC olympic coverage.
Let's face it, american network coverage of anything except baseball, basketball, hockey or
football sucks!

no that's the beauty of the CBS plan.. they will show bits of the stage interspersed with totally
disjointed stage results from the previous week. Just like the average CP likes his sport...

For those in Quebec- Canal Evasion is supposed to be showing each stage
live. According to the schedule on their website (www.canalevasion.com) they will show all stages
live from 9 to 11:30am EDT (except the prologue which is from 11 to 1:30pm) with repeats at 9
to 11:30pm. So with this and OLN you may need to buy more tapes ;-) Darius

When OLN got the rights to the Tour de France they covered their commitments to their sponsors by
buying air time blocks on the Fox Sports Network and CBS for Sundays. I don't know how the ratings
compared but usually the big four draw better ratings than any cable channel. Also lots of homes
don't have OLN on basic cable. They were only on Fox Sports for one year. While CBS may only get a
flat rate for the hour OLN bought, the ratings for the show stick to CBS. They wouldn't want to be

CBS coverage is simply awful. Lots of Olympic-style human-interest stories and little race coverage.

Speaking of the "re-air" shows on OLN, are those shows better to watch than the live
broadcasts(which I can't watch live anyway as I'm at work)?

I reccomend that everyone just waits on alpe d'huez a few hours...watch the radio and tv though you can get updates...So go for a ride...have a bbq...drink some beer and then watch the stage.

"Part of the contract with the Tour de France and OLN is that a network station also has to cover the race. The Tour show must be broadcast to a national audience and not just to a cable network.

"The deal OLN has is with CBS. Every Sunday, CBS broadcasts the Tour on their national channel. OLN has a crew of 50 people producing, working, and making the Tour coverage. The OLN crew cuts, edits, and tapes each of the shows on the sets at each stage.

"CBS does things a little differently. They have a central editing point, let's say in Southern France, and then they have shuttle drivers that drive the tapes back and forth from point A to point B. Sometimes the transfer distances are up to a 10-hour drive."

In past years they were heavily edited and commentary was added at the end. This year the re-airs
are the same as live basically. Then there are the 30-minute "preview" shows that recap the
previous day.
