    Sunday evening after The Comedy Show [1] I took the bike out for a spin.
    Time to revisit the local hill. I have a circuit that is quite short but
    includes a 75m height gain (max of about 1 in 8) by riding up Dundee Law.

    Anyway, it was a nice evening, and as I started the ascent I was passed by
    the usual ned wagon, a nova with rear spoiler packed with lads. So I waved
    cheerily at them.

    When I got to the car park at the top I waved at them again then headed
    down for the next circuit. They were still there enjoying the sunset when I
    came up the hill the second time.

    The third time round I had made it to the top and ned the driver winds down
    his window, leans out and shouts 'Oi! You wer 5 minutes slower that time!'

    Ok, so I put a bit more effort in for the fourth and final time. As I came
    up the hill and round the last corner the nova was waiting at the top about
    to go. Down comes the window and they shout 'eight minutes' as they headed
    off down the hill.

    Quite fun really and gave that bit of incentive to put a touch more effort
    in.

    (BTW you can find the hill at NO 391 313. The road up winds around the hill
    for one complete turn. The circuit isn't very long (no more than a couple of
    K) but is good for the heart and lungs and legs)

    I usually look for routes that go *around* the law rather than over!
    But I suppose I should try it sometime soon...

    I'd guess eight minutes. That is down, round and back up. Not terribly quick
    but it was on the MTB.

    It isn't too bad. The first part from the High Kirk to the public toilets is
    as steep as it gets and is sustained. If you can manage that part then you
    can keep the same gear all the way to the top. The other part that is almost
    as steep is the bit round the back where the road is cut out from the hill.
    But that bit of steepness is much shorter.

    I figured I'd like to try some of the big passes at some point soon so
    calculated the height in terms of Law ascents. That puts Cairn o'Mount at
    six Laws, and the Lecht at 4 Laws.

    They are a bit steeper though so I'll have to find some easier gears for the
    road bike (currently with a 40" bottom gear which does fine down to a
    sustained 1 in 8).

    I suppose I could always put my kids in the trailer and tow them up the hill
    to simulate a 1 in 5.

    Yeah, tarmac all the way but there's a couple of cattle grids.

    That is at NO 377 399 for those who want to spot hills.

    I might have a go at it tonight if I feel up to it. I have about 75 minutes
    between dropping my son at his youth club to picking him up again so will
    try to get as far up as I can before I run out of time.

    Should have added that you might have to do a bit of a slalom round the
    cowpats!

    And watch out for the kamikaze sheep...

    Looks fun. about 300m climb straight up from the crossroads.

    Odds on I don't make it in time but worth a try anyway.

    There's a bit of a climb past some houses to the first cattle-grid and a
    gate. The bit to the next cattle-grid is OK then it gets very steep.

    I missed the word gate when I first read this. Got as far as the gate before
    running out of time. I'd come from Lochee via Bridgefoot to the gate in just
    about 36 mins which I was pretty pleased with especially as I was on the MTB
    (I knew I'd been pushing because both legs were starting to cramp *before*
    starting the climb.)

    Didn't fancy trying to climb the gate with the bike and make my way through
    the field full of bulls, especially as I was already on my time limit to get
    back.

    Some other time I'll do the whole thing.
