He was helped by the inexperience of Nibali. Nabili attacked Horner and
Gonzalez and ended up riding solo on the flats/descent while Horner
conserved his energy taking turns with Gonzalez. Nabili didn't have anything
left to keep up with Horner afterwards. Horner said that when he attacked
the peloton, it wasn't at full strength, he made sure to keep something in
reserve.

Experience pays.

He was fairly local for a while (riding with Webcor), and from the other
guys I know on the team, particularly the lesser riders, they found it hard
to believe all the [censored] they'd read about him... saying instead that he was
a very nice guy, very friendly on the rides, helpful, and somebody that
people wanted to work for. So I found myself switching camps from believing
that the guy wasn't going to cut it in Europe (since, after all, he'd
already failed once before... leave the US and things just don't go so well)
to really hoping that things just might work out this time. And looks like
they are.

And yes, it'll be cool to have one more US guy in the TDF, especially a guy
who will be looking for opportunities to go for the win.

I think his teammate at the time Gord Fraser one a stage, and Horner
was top 3 or 5 on a stage and perhaps the overall.

He was part of a team that won the team World Cup and appeared on a
podium for that.

My impression of him from a couple of years at the San Francisco GP was that
he was a really nice guy but that he was pretty much insulted by some of the
people there in the media and POSSIBLY by Lance. I'm not sure if Lance
purposely stood in a position so that Horner was ignored by the press or if
that just accidently happened. I did see that Chris was pretty shocked by
the press all turning away from him and running for Lance who had dropped
out of the race early. I know that I was too.
