on Rabobank's Marc Wauters in the pursuit (3 Klicks)

Yep. Apparently Wauters shot out of his pedal at the start but still
managed to have the early lead. But that turned quickly and they say
the difference on the line was big.

though) a couple of years ago.

Restarts were traditionally (and still are) allowed for "mechanical
problems" but I was of the opinion that a "pull-out" was not a
mechanical problem officially and said so in a post.

Someone corrected me back then though, so I'm now wondering what the
situation really is and whether it would have had any relevance last
night?

Holy lord, is this track made out of dirt? Those are some sad times
for these guys.

hah, this is still fresh in my mind since i took a track officials
course this weekend.

the current rule is that you are allowed a restart if there is *any*
mishap in the first half lap you are allowed a restart.

but this wasn't always the rule. there was a distinction between
different types of mishaps. i think at the sydney olympics shane kelly
pulled out his foot at the start of the kilo and he was done. if that
happened today he would've gotten a restart.

that said, the race between wauters and boonen was an exhibition and
probably wasn't run on UCI rules.
