Watching the Tour this year I was most impressed by Alexandre Vinokourov,
I would put him up there with Basso and Ullrich as fovorite to win the tour.
His biggest drawback may be his new team ,Liberty-Seguros, I understand he wanted to ride for Discovery but was not invited. Lance has said of Vinokourov," "Vino is arguably the most complete cyclist around. He can attack, time trial and mountain climb. When it all clicks, there's probably no match." Yet Discovery past on him and Discovery dosen't pass on anyone unless Lance authorizes it. Maybe because he seems to ride for himself
rather than the team (as was illustrated more than once in this years tour riding for T-Mobile and not offerng much support for Ullrich)

This has been discussed to death under both Road Racing and Grand Tour forums, but I believe that if Discovery did indeed pass on Vino it has more to do with the fact that he is unable to make it through a grand tour without a major 10 minutes down ' bad ' day.
Discovery does not appear to be interested in a strong performer and sure stage winner who does not appear to have the wherewithal to win the top podium spot. Whether they got it right with Popo or not remains to be seen, but then again, they also have Savoldelli who should be in a position (if they actually send a real team with him this time around) to defend his Giro victory.
Not because he rides for himself. If he went to the Tour he would go as team leader. And in that case of course he rides for himself, and everyone else on the team rides for him. As Armstrong (rightly) did for the past seven years. 🙄

I think Ivan Basso will the next Tour Winner, If he continues to improve his time trailing he should be unstopable. Also Popovych, will be Future winner, and Mr Damiano Cunego, look out for him🙂

Ulrich can also be a contender, he just has to (1) train slightly harder (2) get a massive lead on time trials (3) don't get dropped in mountains.

Yes, we may have a real classic shaping up with Basso and Ullrich next year. If Ullrich can remain single minded in his training (ala Lance) and Basso learns to pace his time trials.I will miss Armstrong but it's good opening up the field and wondering who the next great rider of the tour will be , at least for cycling fans. I imagine the casual fan will lose all interest so you might find a good bargain on a Trek . 🙄
