Just thought of an interesting stat that might have been on there, but I missed it. How many one-
time posters originate a thread and then are never seen again? It's disappointing when you see a
whole lot of people take their time to try and help someone out with something, ask the original
poster further questions in order to better help him/her, but never see a reply.

it's not entirely accurate .. i know that my first posts on rec.bicycles were around 1992 .. then i
dropped off radar until 1996 when i surfaced just in time for a standing/hanging on/from spokes
debate (which not coincidentally also marks my first flame from jobst). then off again until 2002.

As someone else pointed out, the dates aren't entirely accurate; I've actually been with
Netcome/Earthlink since... not even sure, but it goes way back. I've actually got multiple ISPs
though, to make sure I have connectivity no matter what. The joys of being a business person.

I've wondered about that. I wonder how many of these are (1) trolls (e.g. thread asking for
Christian or anti-Bush jerseys), or (2) people who get flummoxed by the humorous / sarcastic /
technical nature of the replies, or (3) get their answer and don't bother to acknowledge?

I'm guessing group #2 is of reasonable size. I hang around the statistics newsgroups, and it's a
common phenomenon for somebody to ask a somewhat poorly formed question (if you could form the
question fully accurately, you would probably know the answer), and for the replies to come back
with language that's rather incomprehensible.

You may say that's less likely on a bicycle newsgroup, and it probably is. But I think there are a
lot of people who get thrown off by an unfamiliar term. That's one of the ways in which Sheldon
Brown's site is so great -- there's the built-in glossary and generally a link to pictures for
concepts that may be confusing.

As for #3, there are some people who forget they did the posting, but by and large I think it's just
the same carelessness that leads people not to thank others for Christmas gifts.

It's scary to know that three of us in top nine have met.

The heading was "most consistently present over xx days" or something like that, wasn't it? I don't
take it as "most frequent", or "most prolific". Maybe more like popping into a pub for one quick
wimp of beer every two or three days. As opposed to hanging around a bar all day.
