I'm assuming you mean MSWindows-compatible; the Linux
stuff that I run on PCs might be good for you but not
what you wanted O:-)

That said, the news client in Mozilla is pretty good
and completely free. As an added bonus you get a much
better browser and a mail client with learning spam filters.

Another very popular news client was Agent. The free
version is somewhat less capable, and you might want
to consider the (IIRC $40) upgrade -- I know people
who bought theirs more than five years ago and they
still get updates. The people who use Agent are
amazingly loyal, which should tell you something.

Use Outlook express still and purge your newsgroup databases - something
might have got corrupted.
Assuming WinXP latest Outlook Express Tools->Options->Maintenance->Store
Folder
Careful you only erase the newsgroups and not your mail box items
As a measure I would pkzip/backup the whole folder before you start messing
about.
