Hi all, I am looking for a new bike at the moment and need your help.i have only ever owned BMXs and for the past 5 years have been riding 24" Cruisers. So any information i know about MTBs isn't worth mentioning. Due to the greater distances i have been riding and the hilly area i live in now the BMX isn't making my riding as enjoyable as i would like. Here is where i enter the world of MTBs and need you help. i will be riding to work daily (about 10kms(4.5 miles) round trip) mostly on sealed roads with a few trail shortcuts.) and weekend riding of mostly trails with a few downhill runs. do i get a hardtail or dualie? What size frame? do i get a new bike or a up spec near new bike. i am 75kgs and 5"7" or 171cms tall. i live in Australia but i assume we can get most brands available in the US or other. My budget is AUD$2000 to $2500 (US$1440-$1800). Any advice or opinions welcome.

My suggestion:
First, go with a hardtail over a full suspension. If you were using the bike solely for mountain biking, then a FS may have been the way to go. Since you're also commuting, I suggest the hardtail.
Which one? I don't know. You may even want to look at a 29er. A 29er has 29" wheels vs. 26" wheels. Once up to speed, they roll better. About the only knock against 29ers is whether the wheels are durable enough to withstand traditional mountain biking.

Actually 10km is about 6 miles. With your budget you can get a much nicer hardtail than dual suspension. I think if you really want a double boinger, you should up your budget by at least another AUD$1000. The price of rear suspension bikes is edging down, but you will still get a bunch of low end parts for the money you want to spend. The Specialized Stumpjumper disc looks good to me, but there will be other nice hardtails to choose from in that price range. If you can find a used bike you like, that's great, but I never seem to have much luck finding what I want. You will be looking mostly at small sized frames, but you could ride a medium if you like a bigger bike. Specialized has a 15.5" frame that should fit you nicely. Giants go from 14" to 17", not good for you. The quick and dirty way to size a frame is with standover. If you straddle the bike and the top tube is uncomfortably close to the family jewels, consider a smaller frame.

Thanks Slinky... great advice, i am have looked at next years TREK fuel 80 for AUD$2200 lifetime warranty of the frame. some XT components, i thought i might spend more on a frame and replace components as i wear them out. Less painfull on the wallet? i know their (trek) track record on road bikes, anyone know what the MTBs are like?
