  1. At the age of 39 I'm becoming addicted to cycling after more than a decade without a bike. I've been doing nice 22 km rides nearly every day since I bought my hybrid two weeks ago. Everything's great, my butt is now fully broken in, but I'm still a bit sore in the area just behind the testicles (I assume there's a name for this bodypart?).

I should add: a few days ago that area got sore enough after a 6 km straightaway that I felt my penis start to go numb. I quickly got off and massaged myself (to the bemusement of passersby, I'm sure), and for the rest of my ride the area behind the testicles felt quite tender. Tender enough that I didn't ride for the next two days. Today I got back on with a gel pad and with the saddle tilted forward slightly, and happily the numbness didn't happen again.

    What I'm wondering:

    1. Would cycling shorts be a good/necessary investment? During my ride today I experimented with holding my boys up by hand, and noticed that they weren't coming into contact with the saddle. Is this the point of the shorts?

    2. Is a gel pad unnecessary if you have a good saddle? Can anyone recommend a saddle that reduces the strain on the area in question?

    3. A cycling friend told me the saddle should be perfectly level. I tilted it forward slightly today, and noticed that while there was less strain on the area in question, I had a heavier load on my hands and arms, which I think would be tiring on longer rides. Can anyone offer suggestions here?

    Thanks!
    Rousseau

  2. You should use a pair of shorts with some padding. Most will tell you to go spandex or lycra, but really, the most important thing is that you need some padding down there. The padding does not hold your "boys" up; they do just what the name says: pad your bum as you are sitting on a few inches of hard plastic/leather.

After your underparts get sufficiently callouse, padded seat should not be necessary. But it won't hurt to give them a shot .. convention be damned.

Yes, generally speaking, you want to be level. If, when you leveled your seat, you felt undue pressure on your arms, perhaps the seat is set too high up. Try lowering a bit. Consider going to bike shop to get fitted. Or at least get a decent bike repair book and look at their fit tips. Check online too. Lots of places with fairly good tips. But you can't beat professional advice. most charge a nominal fee for fitting. Cost scales with level of detail. But for a hybrid, I doubt they'd charge too much.

    Good luck and keep riding.

  3. Thanks for the advice!

  4. A saddle with a slot like the Serfas RX Mens or Selle Italia Gel Flow is a good idea. Bike setup is important, you may be too low at the front, is the top tube long? Bring the seat forward a little and raise the bar height at the stem before considering a shorter stem. The handgrips on the bars should be level with or a little higher than the seat.

  5. Padded shorts and Assos chamois cream. That's a good start. The chamois cream is a lubricant and anti bacterial and is really good. Wouldn't be without it. Wash your shorts regularly after every ride and the cream keeps the padding supple.
After many trials and tribulations with saddles, I purchased the Fizik 'Arione' wing flex road saddle. One of the best buys I've made.
However, saddles are very individual items and what suits one person doesn't suit another I'm afraid, but definately worth a try.

  6. In these last few days of riding I've had less pain, which may be due to the slight adjustment I made to the saddle. Many thanks for all of the advice!

  7. Ah yes, the ol' prostate... Something to really think about. Don't want things to go numb now!

I remember having this issue years before. Now i'm starting to ride again and i see more options available. I'm riding on a decent road bike saddle, but i'm beginning to get the same issue. Next $$ i get, i will buy a saddle with the center groove cut out like reccomended above. I cannot think of anything else. I'm still fine-tuning my saddle position, but after some time of riding the prostate still gets pinched and blood flow is regularly reduced... 🙁 bad stuff. Get prostate friendly saddle.

GET CYCLING SHORTS. They are dorky and all, but boy do they make a difference in comfort. Make sure you get a good pair - 10$-20$ jump does get you much better stuff. Check them out inside and out, make sure the padding is superior, and the material of high quality. Don't skimp $ on this one. Wash after every ride (along with all else).

  13. Get padded riding shorts. They were a great investment for me.

  14. Riding position is Alpha and Omega. If you can find a somebody in your area to do a professional bike fit you won't regret the investment. I used www.njdsportsinjuries.co.uk. Brilliant! Also I noticed different makes of shorts made a difference, some were good and some I never got rid of the friction and soreness so try a few different brands until you find the ones that are best for you. But time is the big healer. Getting used to your saddle takes quite a few hundred kms. Good luck. 🙂
