Hi all.
I’m a 38yr old mum and wife, weigh about 270lbs and have had a bike for 41 days.
I thought my first 1.5 mile cycle might kill me – but enjoyed the final downhill so much I stuck with it. (Though in all honesty I thought my knees had fallen off, as when I got off after the first ride, my legs wobbled so much!)
I’ve been cycling on Bridle Paths and Seafront Promenades, as I don’t drive and roads scare the hell out of me. I can now cycle 10 miles if it’s dead flat – stopping every 3 miles or so for a mouthful of water. I can do 6 miles if there are very slight hills. If there are big hills – I don’t go there!
In the 41 days I’ve had my bike, I have cycled 107 miles. I’m actually quite proud of this as I’m a real hefter and haven’t been on a bike since I had a Grifter in the early 80’s.
I obviously need to lose a lot of weight, but I haven’t seriously started dieting yet – as I quit smoking the day I bought my bike and haven’t managed to quit the replacement snacking yet.
With the background out of the way, here are my newbie questions.
When I get home after a ride, the ‘that was cool and I’m still alive’ endorphins give me the strength to lug the bike up the stairs. (I live on the first floor). I usually have a drink of juice and then, every single time, without exception within 5 minutes – I am absolutely freezing. It’s bizarre. It goes beyond jumpers, to multiple layers and a blanket with chattering teeth, regardless of outside temperatures.
Is this normal?
Second question. I am the weight that I am due to bread, cheese and pasta. I’m a carb fiend, not a sweets junkie. After a cycle though, I crave chocolate. And it’s a real ‘I’m going to kill you if you don’t get me a Mars Bar right now’ type of affair.
Is there anything I can do/eat before a ride to stop this post ride insanity?
And lastly, (for now!) are there any companies that you know of that sell cycling shorts/undies with padding, for women of my size? My Google-Fu is letting me down. I feel I could cycle a bit further, if I could be a bit more comfortable. It’s not aching in the legs that stopping me!
Thanks for listening/reading.
Any advice gratefully received.
