  1. Hi,

I went for my first serious (as in exercise) bicycle ride
    today. I rode for 45 minutes non-top. I had a good workout
since I felt my HR getting a good boost throughout the ride.
My biggest complaint is that I did not feel very comfortable
during the ride; I felt something was wrong with my setup.
Also, my right hand kept on going numb. I'm riding a hybrid
bike by trek (7500FX). I decided on this bike since I will
also be using it for commuting during the week as well as on
the weekends to work out. Should I have gone for the road
bike? Also, I should note that the guys at this very
reputable bike store setup the height of the seat for me and
also helped me choose the "right" size frame. What could be
wrong? Any input would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Try some cycling gloves. I had this problem when bike
touring. Apparently it's caused by the constant road
vibration on your hand damaging your nerve endings. Mine
got as bad as not being able to write or perform certain
tasks with my right hand for about a week. Now I have some
gloves with nice thick leather padding on the palm and am
much more comfortable. I noticed the problem more on my
hybrid commuter/touring bike, than on my racing bike with
drop bars and that cork tape stuff. This is despite having
more weight on the hands on this bike and thinner/harder
    tyres etc. Not sure why

Not necessarily. I had a look at an on-line picture of your
bike, and I noted it has a flat handlebar. It may be that
adjusting the angle of the brake levers in relation to the
handlebar would be more comfortable for you, especially if
the way things are now, grasping both the grips and the
brake levers bends your wrists at an uncomfortable angle.
Rotating those brake levers upward a bit can make the
    difference between torture and joy.

It's one thing to try, anyway.

    cheers, Tom

Congratulations, on your new bike and your inaugural ride.
First, in my opinion, you have a great bike. I have one
very similar to yours - including the straight handlebars.
I never have hand pain issues. I also have a road bike: on
the road bike I have some hand discomfort when I start the
ride but it goes away as I get into it. The post above
about getting gloves - good gloves - is very important.
Also, and to me, more importantly, this is your first ride
on it. Spend a few more hours checking yourself and the
bike while riding. Get comfortable, maintain a loose grip
on the bars, don't tense your shoulders, and maintain loose
and slightly bent elbows (don't stiff arm the bars). If you
are still uncomfortable then go back to your LBS and have
them readjust your bike to fit you. You have a great
    hybrid, enjoy!

Put some bar-ends or aerobars on the bike to create
alternate hand positions, and switch hand positions
    frequently.
