  1. Tomorrow I am running in my first race, the Breacon 10 mile (16.9 km). It
looks like it is going to be a hot day (23 / 73 degrees). Can anyone offer
any advice on things I should do before, during and after to keep me going?

I ran 9.6 miles last weekend and it was hot for the second half.

    Thank you for your time.

It looks like the race start will be around 67 and the finish (depending
on how long it takes you) will be from 68 to 72. Have you done any
training in these temperatures? If you have, then there's probably
nothing you need to do other than drink at all the aid stations and stay
hdrated today. If you haven't, then be prepared to accept somewhat of a
slowdown in your planned race pace.

If you want specifics, that's a little hard to say. Personally, I would
drink about 20 oz of sports drink 1.5 hours before the start of the race.
Then another 12 oz about 5 minutes before the start. On a 10 mile race I
would probably skip the aid stations, unless it is very hot. If you
aren't used to running 10 miles, then stop at all the aid stations,
especially if you plan on running for much more than 90 minutes.

FWIW, from Bob Glover's book, a rule of thumb is that you will lose about
1 second per mile per degree above 60.

Thanks Phil, just wanted a bit of reassurance really. Looking forward to it

  6. When the going gets unbearable, repeat to yourself.... "I'm not a putz.
I'm not a putz. I'm not a putz." Of course, you'll be lying, but the
time spent will keep your mind off of the heat stroke and cotton mouth.
Oh, and by the way Buttercup, 73 degrees isn't really that hot.
