Rancho Penasquitos (although it has lots of tough parts available); also
Sycamore Canyon in Santee (though still messed up from fires last year).

Not sure what to suggest re. rentals; best bet probably the Yellow Pages.

shouldn't do that. Mountaing Bike Warehouse would be a good place to start
for bike rentals.

If I am new to the sport as is clearly stated in the subject , what is
wrong with looking for trail without steep uphills? I didn't say flat.
As far as the ride down the boardwalk great suggestion. Give me the
address and I'll make a detour to your Mom's house while I'm at it and
she could do the riding when I get there.

You might try looping the harbor. You will have to take the ferry for
part of the ride but flat it is. Harbor drive kinda sucks. The roads in
pretty bad shape, but since you will be on a mountain bike, it won't
matter. The rest of the ride is pretty nice.

you forget about mountain biking if you don't want to ride steep
uphills? Better yet, why don't you take a Kokopelli's trip with one
of those lame tour companies who drive you up the biggest climbs so
you can go back to New Jersey and brag about how manly you are?
