1. I'm a newbie and I'm training for the Aids Life Cycle ride in June. 545 miles from SF to Los Angeles! I've always wanted a road bike and now I got me one. A Specialized Allez. I really like it. It came with 105 everything. I have come to love riding my bike and meeting fellow riders, now I'm online and wanting to meet some mo'

I do have a quick question,
My ride came with a double crankset, should I have gotten a triple? I'm slow on the hills but is it really worth the hassle? Should I consider swapping for a triple?

Any advice would be welcomed!

I know I don't know anything so please feel free to give me some pointers for the long rides ahead of me.

2. Let's see...firstly, Make sure to regularly maintain your bike. A happy bike is a clean bike. Second, Read up on everything that you can. Go hunting for info basically. Expand your knowledge. I really can't say much else; the journey is yours. Just ride like your blood won't flow if you don't!

Good luck

Forget the triple, they're for girls.

How many teeth are on the biggest gear in the back?

Do not worry about the triple crank.

If climbing is a challenge, then climbing is what you must be working on!!! Start with small hills and move on to bigger ones. You will then improve!!

And do not forget to RIDE RIDE and more RIDING!!! 😄

Don't listen to ridiculous bias statements like that. That's his opinion...which means that either he lives in a extremely flat area, or enjoys blowing out his legs mashing up hills.

Triples are good for entry level bikes, or people, until you truly get an idea for what your legs can handle and the type of hills you have around in your area.

1st lesson, don't listen to people that try to force their opinion on you, but, granted the final decision is always yours.

Good luck, and be safe. 🙂

Geeze Bikelyst, I thought we were friends, especially after I posted my bikes in your picture thread and everything. The triple dig is just ribbing, I have plenty of friends with triples and we always call it the Girl Scout ring. They don't seem to mind it a bit.

I agree, it was a bit off base, but I don't want him (OP) thinking that if he gets a trip that everyone will brush him off as a newbie. I fell victim to that effect when I posted a thread similar to this a couple of months ago.

No hard feelings. I took it the wrong way.

If you are not convinced by now to keep the double and forget all about the triple I'll help. You would need a new FD, crankset, BB and RD or at least a long cage for the RD. With labor $300 at least. So just start climbing. You didn't make a bad decision.
