It's a nice thought, but the fact is an excess of people are on usenet specifically to call people
stupid, or an idiot, or some other derogatory remark. Ah well.

While I'll admit good manners are a good start for the new year, it was my understanding that a new
year's resolution was made for one's self, not offered by others.

A newsgroup, being a public forum, is going to have rude people. It's a fact of life. We experience,
we knuckle up, and we move on. We grow stronger, and hopefully leave alittle of ourselves behind us.
To ask more of us, is to forget one's self.

You aren't the only person who thinks that mindless and pointless insults drive people away because
they can't handle it. I've seen it posted several times and I think it's time to refute it. People
are driven away because they have no interest in mindless and pointless posts. People read this
newsgroup for many different reasons, but most posters aren't interested in reading stupid insults.
Intelligent and cutting insults? Sometimes, for some posters. Reading repetitive posts that say,
"you are an idiot" is dull and boring. People don't leave this group because they are "driven
away", they leave because they are bored and don't find that the posts are interesting enough to be
worth the time.

I once spoke plainly, but calmly, to a 7 year old who was making insulting remarks about her
grandmother, words plainly learned from her parent who didn't like this person as a mother, despite
the fact all the other siblings in the family *did* like this woman as mother. I told her that big,
tough, judgemental words might make her feel big and tough and in control, but they only impress the
feeble-minded. Of course I was saying this to her father, who was at the table as well. Since the
family was also rah-rah BornAgain, I also reminded her the Jesus she believed in would exhort her to
be gentler of tongue. I'm not sure if this had any lasting effect, but this granddaughter did grow
up to defy father and visit her "disowned" grandparents quite a bit. blacksalt Fan of the ObFood.
ObFood: While the a.m. toast is toasting, I place my knife, loaded with cold cream cheese, over the
slots. By the time the toast is up, the CC spreads easily.

I think you have that backwards. I think an excess of people post to newsgroups with the intent
to incite people, and are well deserving of being called an idiot. Don't blame the people who
call it as it is.

Perhaps I didn't phrase my post well, or I don't understand your reply, but I think that we are
agreeing completely.

Let's say that you were thinking about going to a party, but then you find out that someone that you
know to have poor manners will be attending. So, you decide to stay home instead. But then, someone
advises that you just need to grow a thicker skin. However, that's not the point. I'm sure that your
skin is thick enough to withstand the poor manners. It's just that it isn't fun or useful to have to
put up with it. It's a more productive use of your time to stay home.

I think it works that way on this group. People leave the group sometimes, not because their skin
isn't thick enough, but because it isn't worth their time to read through some of the posts.
