Everything is done "a la Wainwright". If you hadn't seen an original you
wouldn't know that there had been any amendments. Someone I know in the book
business tells me that they have created a computerised font by scanning
originals, so the writing is "authentic". The major difference I can see is
that the paths on the ground are now shown in red to differentiate them from
the rest of the drawings. The main changes are to the peripheral
information, but the bulk of the guide is as we've always known.

No need to be worried, the exercise has been handled very well.

How does one tell on a quick glance at the shelf of a bookshop the
'NEW'
imprints? Without going to every Wainwright and opening to look at the
print date. i.e. what tells it apart from former works.

On the jacket there is a colured band at the top and bottom, green for Book
1, as before. The top band has the words "Second Edition" in white, and the
bottom band has the words "Revised by Chris Jesty". The spine also says that
this is the second edition.
Note - there has only been one edition before. The various reprints were all
called impressions and numbered consecutively.

There's an image of the cover at

It says 'REVISED EDITION' in reasonably sized text under 'LAKELAND
FELLS' in large text.

Sounds interesting. Could help to avoid the "fell highways" and choose
the less frequented paths which are not in favour nowadays to enjoy the
peacefull and quiet places of Lakeland.

How many alterations are there in average? Could you give an example?

It could do I suppose. But there are an awful lot of routes marked in
the original as 'too busy and unpleasant' which are still too busy and
unpleasant, whereas adjacent routes marked' quiet and uneroded' are
still quiet and (relatively) uneroded. ie even with the originals,
most people stuck to the established tourist routes.
