More snow on Saturday and solid ice on the streets Saturday night and today--it is a nightmare. We
are having the coldest weather we've had in years. They've closed schools tomorrow--my vacation has
been extended at least one day. They are expecting another 4-12 inches on Monday night and into
Tuesday morning so if that happens I'll have my vacation extended again (we live in Washington, we
never get snow!!!)--I'm hoping!!!!

Not a bit when I got home tonight in Seattle. But I was in Winthrop over the weekend and this
morning it was Minus 14F. It was chilly. My friend who has lived there for 7 years says it has not
been that cold since she moved there. Yes, my weather program is showing 22F right now in Seattle.

Ikes, I couldn't handle it if the kids had one more day home from school. <G> We are so used to the
nasty weather here, we have *snow days* built right into the school calendar (government mandates
how many days of attendence in order to receive funding). If they are not used (when school has to
be closed due to emergency) then the kids get out earlier in the spring. Do you know, will your
school calendar have to be extended due to the emergency closing? Or is this something that has
never come up before?

I didn't know you live in WA!! I'm in Thurston County (Olympia) which apparently was one of the
hardest hit by this weather!! My brother and sister-in-law just got back from Chicago and said it
was sunny and 40 the whole week when it normally is cold and snowing--they didn't have problems with
snow until their flight was delayed in Seattle for 2 hours, they saw snow for the first time since
leaving on Christmas when they got off the plane!!

How did you get away without snow Fred? We had snow off and on all last week, then it got really
cold Friday and snowed Saturday. We have about 3 inches, but none of it has melted since the temps
here are around -10C. We're supposed to get more snow again tomorrow.

I have a cousin in Yorkton, Saskatchewan who just emailed me to say that it is -51C with the wind
chill factor. Now that's cold!

Do you have a weather station that you hook up to your computer? I got DH a 1-Wire Weather
Instrument Kit V3.0 from AAG Electronica for Christmas. He's downloaded the software and got it
working in the house, now just has to get it set up outside. Here's a link to the site if you're

It's come up--we have snow days built in our calander too because when it does snow we usually at
least start 2 hours late (don't have to make that up) or miss school all together since our snow
is so wet it freezes and turns to ice pretty quickly sometimes. We only have this happen once
maybe twice a year so it's not too bad and usually no more than 2 days in a row let alone 2 days
in a year.

Tonight we are supposed to get up to 12 inches of snow (according to weather this morning) and
tomorrow it will turn to freezing rain before turning to rain. I'm hoping this will mean no school
tomorrow and Wednesday (please, please, please)--I don't mind making it up at the end of the year--
my job is easier the last week of school than the first week back from break!!!

year ... and I've been living Chicago winters for 46 years! The weather was gorgeous the past few
days, hovered right around 50 ... then the storm warnings started rolling in yesterday, snow started
around 8PM Saturday evening. Not much had accumulated when I went to bed (4AM), ground was too warm
so nothing was sticking ... kids said the driving was horrid though, very slick as the temp dropped
to the freezing mark (probably were getting a mixture of snow/rain/sleet in those earlier hours).
When I got up this morning we had a few inches and it was really coming down. It snowed all day
today, roads weren't cleared, again kids said driving was pretty crummy. Guess when you live in this
area, driving in the nasty conditions doesn't bother you much - it's a fact of life. LOL Anyway,
originally the weather guessers had predicted a major accumulation, up to 12 inches in outlying
areas. I just took the trash to the street and figure we MIGHT have 4 or 5 inches total. Temps are
supposed to drop to the teens mid-week, then back into the 30's by the week-end.

Hub works in excavating, says he can never remember having no frost line in the ground in January.
This is also the first snowfall of the year for us. The plow boys have really been crying. <g>

(mon/tue) Yes, those prairie areas get really cold. Your getting snow is somewhat unusual since you
are so close to water???

I only have a program that checks the web for temp. I do have a Radio shack remote thermometer on
the porch and read it from upstairs (G)

I've always wanted something more interesting and the other window is going to the site you
posted.....Oh, boy, seems over my head (g) I would not know where to start..... Let me know how it
goes - I might need a computer store owner for consult (G)

I saw on the news last night or this morning that our airport is now trying to catch up from the
late arrivals from Chicago--I guess they got out in time!!!

As you know the ocean is right across the road. We do get snow at the most, probably twice a year.
This last 4 or 5 days has been usually cold for our area. I've spent time in the Kamloops/Williams
Lake areas in the winter and that is what it feels like here right now. Weird as the snow is nice
and powdery. We're used to that heavy wet snow that makes great snowballs!

James is an electronic geek, so he can figure out this stuff in record time. Me, I'd rather watch
the report on the news hour, unless of course someone else has figured out the difficult part of
hooking up the darn thing! I'll let you know how it goes once he gets it installed outside. Might be

Well, we finally got snow. Started slowly and only maxed out at about 4 inches where I live. I
did manage to ski at Greenlake. We did about 5 miles and a bit of hill work. I did get some
shallow turns in.

The city is a paralyzed mess. I did get in to work this morning and stayed for a bit. Decided to
miss the real mess sharing the roads with too many other cars.

Now the follow up is some freezing rain - it will be very pleasant - SITTING AT HOME BY THE FIRE

As you know the ocean is right across the road. We do get snow at the most, probably twice a year.
This last 4 or 5 days has been usually cold for our area. I've spent time in the Kamloops/Williams
Lake areas in the winter and that is what it feels like here right now. Weird as the snow is nice
and powdery. We're used to that heavy wet snow that makes great snowballs!

hooking up the darn thing! I'll let you know how it goes once he gets it installed outside. Might
be a bit as he won't be doing it before it warms up here!

Oh, re: weather station - I imagine that it is not hard since it comes in a kit form but I was
reading about the extra units for humidity and pressure and how they have to be chained in and they
had FAQ's with electronic diagrams, etc which seemed a bit much for me.

LOL! You are right about the timing of school extensions. My daughter missed the full week of
school, just before the holiday break. She was so upset and worried that she would never get caught
up. I told her not to sweat it - not much ever was done just before breaks or at the end of the
year. She was caught up before she headed back to classes this week. <g>

Wow, it does sound like your schools are closed more than ours are - but we never once have had a
late start. Our schools seem to be on an *all or nothing* schedule. Has to be -10 or huge snowfall
that comes in the wee hours for classes to be cancelled. Very seldom do we now have snowfall close
the buildings, only when the snow falls so quickly that the plows can't keep up ... or drifts are
incredibly high that it is unsafe for kids waiting for buses to pick them up.

Tonight we are supposed to get up to 12 inches of snow (according to weather this morning) and
tomorrow it will turn to freezing rain before turning to rain. I'm hoping this will mean no school
tomorrow and Wednesday (please, please, please)--I don't mind making it up at the end of the year--
my job is easier the last week of school than the first week back from break!!!
