  1. hey, I am new to this newsgroups thing and just wanted to get in on
the postings! I started this as an assignment for a class i am taking.
I love cooking but only do it as a hobby when i get the chance and
watch the Food Network like a maniac. My future mother-in-law is an
Italian woman with an insane ability to cook; i learn most everything
from her! For instance, last night she just threw together this
    incredible pasta dish...

fresh garden tomatoes sliced and sautéed with onions and home made
    cilantro pesto. Amazing!
Thanks for humoring me, hope to really learn some great recipes and
    tips!

Mmm, I've been living on fresh tomatoes and a mild onion; a splash of
balsamic vinegar. Today I added garlic to the mix. Snack on it all
    day......... e.

Get yourself a book called "In Nonna's Kitchen", by Carol Field. Recipes
gleaned from interviews with Italian grandmothers around Italy. Make the
recipes, but hide the book, if you know what I mean.

Velveeta and other patently bad ingredients.

Well I might have 35 years ago.

Now I wouldn't. That's what learning is all about. e.

Instead of using groups.google, which is a miserable way of reading
Usenet newsgroups, I would suggest installing a good newsreader - it
will make your Usenet experience very much more enjoyable. Go to
<http://www.newsreaders.com/> and make your selection, preferably among
the newsreaders with a GNKSA (Good Net-Keeping Seal of Approval) badge.
One newsreader to avoid at all costs is Microsoft Outlook Express
because it sabotages people's filtering, among other things, thus being
    even worse than groups.google.

Comcast, which is apparently your ISP, no longer provides its own
newsserver but outsources to a dedicated Usenet access provider, which
happens to be Giganews in their case. You do not have to pay extra for
    their basic service.

ObFood: I've always enjoyed immensely books by Edouard de Pomiane.
Here's a recipe from his _Cooking in Ten Minutes_. I'd use a few more
    cloves of garlic...

    Victor

    Aîgo-Boulido
    (Garlic Soup)

With one blow of your fist crush two cloves of garlic beneath the
blade of a knife. Put them in a saucepan. Add a bay leaf, a spoonful
of olive oil and then three-quarters of a pint of hot water. Salt.
Pepper. Let it boil for eight to ten minutes. Take the saucepan off
the fire. Put two yolks of egg into your soup tureen. Add half a ladle
of your garlic broth. Mix it well. Pour in the rest of the broth,
stirring all the time. Add four slices of stale bread. Serve.
If there are two of you, consume this fragrant soup in unison,
otherwise the one who refrained would find it hard to bear the other's
    proximity during the evening.
