  1. Hi All,

Just been scanning through some of the later posts. I have been training on
and off for the past 15 years, but due to the job I had been doing for the
last three years, I have not had time to do any training at all -
resultantly I have turned to pure fat - I am 6 feet exactly and 100Kg - most
of the weight is around my waste, back and chest.

Even when I was in form I have never been "cut" or "big", but acceptable to
me. My questions is, I have always had terrible trouble getting my legs to
bulk up - it doesn't seem to matter what I do, they don't get any bigger (I
would be happy with fat quite frankly). So I thought I would fish for any
ideas any of you could give me.

Thanks in anticipation. (Sorry for the life history).

Squat ... a lot. There are other lifts that you can do to supplement
that, but you should practice squatting frequently and heavily for a
while before you start worrying about other lifts.

BTW, I mean back squats. Front squats may provide more development in
the quadriceps and less in the hamstrings, but you should become
    practiced at back squats first.

As to how to squat, the archives of this forum in Google Groups are
replete with more advice than you could ever want, as well as many
links to graphic and multimedia presentations of proper form.

  4. Thanks JMW, excuse my ignorance, but what are "back squats" - unable to
    locate explanantion.

    Many thanks.

Back squats are just plain old squats - if it's not a front squat,
overhead squat, hack squat, etc., then it's a back squat.

But let's put all this into some perspective here - you've been doing
nothing for the last three years, so *anything* you do will be an
improvement and I don't mean that in a bad way - just get going again,
and when you can, see if you can learn to squat.

One thing about those squats. Learn really good form, and learn how to
go deep before you get all macho with the amount of weight. ATG (ass
to the grass) depth probably isn't necessary, but at least really get
to below parallel and work on the flexibility required to get down
there and back up again. Once you've got the form down, then, as a
good sized male, you'll be pleasantly suprised how quickly you'll
manage more weight on the bar. A good cage or squat rack is pretty
important btw. There have been a lot of good threads here about
    attaining depth on squats.

I don't know if this is better, but I think it's more what a
narrow-stance, high-bar squat should look like in terms of not tucking
your butt under. Y'all can tell me if you agree. Not the best camera
angle for looking at the back but I think you'll get the idea, and I'm
deep enough that my thighs are touching about half-way down on my calves
which, with my build, is about all you can hope for. I weigh 153 so
this is about 1-1/4 x bodyweight on the bar.
