Penny, I skied my first double black this weekend at A-Basin. It was Main Street, which is the very
first run skier's left when getting off the Pali lift. It's certainly not the hardest double black
in existence, but it's a start. I wouldn't call myself a "double black" skier quite yet, though =)

A basin is very respectable, good going!! What some folks don't know is that there is no standard
for the diamond system.. it's totally relative to each individual area. For example, the black
diamonds at my home mountain are the steepest at this particualr mtn, but bear no relationship to
what some of us call "real" black diamonds. They'd be steep blues at many other places.

Yeah, that whole system is pretty loose. An unnamed ski area once only had black runs from the
top of a particular lift back to the base area. This resulted in negative comments from out of
state guests so the unnamed ski area fixed it. They just re-categorized that black as a blue.
Problem solved.

I used to ski in Michigan as a kid. In high school a went to a resort called Caberfe (sp?) that had
a double black. My friends and I could clear the whole run by catching air off a bump at the top.
This is not a testament to how radical we were (much less than we believed at the time) but more a
testament to how small and mild the hill was. I realized this on my first Western ski trip to
Snowbird and then confirmed it when I moved to Co and became a Crested Butte passholder.

because there were getting to be too many touron rescue missions. ;-) There's only two groomed run
off the top...

tripple on some scales (appropriately named like Body Bag, Dead Bob's chute, No Wives Traverse,
and The Edge). They aren't on the regular map, but they are on a different "Extreme Limits" map
you can buy.

We'll see. Narrow trees are still scary to me. A few trees for decoration are cool, though.

It's funny, they used to be on the map, but the map was edited about five years ago. It's trees,
steeps and deep snow, with very little grooming, no detachable quads... my kind of mountain. They
say old skiers never die, they just go to red... ;-)

this weekend, nothing like keeping it real.
Mr. Adventure is the Regional Director and so we get to tour (ski all day) all the areas in his
