Just bult up my new (old) singlespeed. Nice old steel frame. Light and lugged (not quite Suzy style but nice..) Some old Sugino cranks and an old 5 speed hub. Canabilised a few bits from some old frames and it all came together nicely.
Sweet soft ride and almost too much frame flex but it feels good!!
AND it came out at 7kg on the bathroom scales! How good is that from the scraps bin?!
Anyone out there got a spare freewheel (screw on) that is dismantleable? I want to strip the one I've got down (a five speed) and put spacers back onto it with only the 17 left.

Well i still weighed the same on the scales, I'll plop it on the big scales at work tomorrow to verify it (they're claibrated for weighing dirt n stuff)
Looks good! Reckon that is a dismantleable freewheel? Can you see the threads on the outside of the freewheel bearing housing?? (cant tell from the pics..) And what do you want for it?

I have no idea.. I'd need a look from a different angle. Not much.. was going to put it on ebay with everything else :-) Are you in Melbourne?

I'm assuming you have a threaded rear hub? A fixed rear cog should screw straight onto that. That's what I did with an old rear wheel that has a Shimano 600 hub. I redished it and put a track cog with a locking ring (which, incidentally, is actually a locking ring from the left hand side of an old bottom bracket - same thread!). You'll be even lighter then. If you didn't want to redish the wheel, I guess you could put some spacers in.

I was assuming the OP wanted to stay with a freewheel? But you are right about the fixed option..

Oops! I think you're right about OP. Anyway, you should still be able to put a single-speed straight onto the road hub. Locking ring will not be needed in that case. I've seen pictures of bikes with a flip-flop hub with fixed on one side and free wheel on the other.
Yeah could do all the above, but siezed spoke nips, limited axle thread, 120mm hub and dodgy chainline prevent all the above. A re built freewheel (screw on) is the simplest option. Also likely the cheapest.
This is my second singlespeed. (Yeah I know- two is more than enough 🙂 I used a flip flop and lockring from a BB on the other with a 16T BMX single freewheel, and a KMC BMX chain, Oh and on a surly 135mm hub.. otherwise I'd just put that wheel in my new singlespeed.

[Tip from the LBS - can unscrew a freewheel cog using 2 chain whips in oposing directions. The smallest cog acts as a lockring on the stack of cogs.]
