  1. I recently came across a pair of 20 GBP cycling shoes in Aldi.On the sole
there are 4 close spaced threaded holes forming a small square and 2 larger
sockets to the front containing cross head screws. The box says SPD
compatible so off I went to E-Bay for a set of SPD Shimano Pedals.Whike I
wait for the pedas any answers to what else I need to go in between the shoe
    and the pedal. ?
    Thanks
    Doc

'Cleats'. For SPDs these are bits of metal about an inch long, which look
a bit like miniature anvils. They bolt firmly to the sole of the shoe,
with the pointed bit facing forwards.
The cleats clip into the two little sprung jaws on the pedals.
You should get a set with the pedals.

As the man said, cleats. Ebay though... were the pedals brand new? Online
shops (settle, chain reaction) have shimano 520 pedals which are a decent
pair of SPDs, including cleats for 22 quid. Cleats alone are a tenner (ie
vastly overpriced) so it's almost worth getting the spare set of pedals with
    them..

(Ok, I notice SJSC are flogging the 520s for not much on ebay - well,
    provided people don't bid stupidly...)

    cheers,
    clive

As others have said, the four holes are to take the cleat that should
    come with the pedals.

The front two larger threaded holes (under your toes) are there to
accept two studs, similar to the screw in studs on rugby/football
boots. These should have come with the shoes in a small ziplok bag,
    together with a suitable spanner.

The toe studs would allow you to climb/run up hills on foot in muddy
condtions (e.g. during cyclocross or MTB racing). They're completely
optional, and unless you're going off road regularly, I'd leave them
out. They'll just go click-click while walking, destroy wooden floors
(don't ask), and probably reduce the amount of grip available on all
    but muddy/soft surfaces.

The cross head screws in place at the moment are just to blank the
holes and keep the threads clean if you're not using the studs. I
don't know if it's the case on these shoes, but if you don't use one or
the other, they may leave a way for water to leak in.

You could have got the pedals from Aldi as well and they came complete with
all the fixings. They were about £11.

The Aldi Cleats used only two of the holes. Do real Shimano ones use all
    four ?

No, just two. The four are to allow flexibility in fore/aft positioning

No. The two pairs of holes allow a little more movement forward and back.
