  1. Hi all,

Again, thanks to everyone that has helped me with my "newbie" questions.

I just got back from a good running store, that two separate friends (they
don't know each other at all) recommended. One has been running for years
and years and years...the other is in training for a half marathon in Sept
(she's already done two 10 milers - this from someone that isn't really a
    runner - such an inspiration!).

    It's specifically a "runners" store...had a LARGE selection of shoes. I had
not a clue...very helpful staff. I feel that I got a good pair of shoes at
a good price. Asics for $90.

So, I'm going to put them on tonight...do a short, slow bit of running and
see how the ole shins feel. I don't expect the shoes to cause a miraculous
ability to run and run and run pain free but, compared to the very
inappropriate shoes I was using, they can't hurt.

I was *shocked* by how *light* they are! Man o man...no wonder my shins
were hurting! The weight of the old shoes makes them feel like bricks
    compared to these new ones.

So, I'll see how I feel. Take it easy and s-l-o-w since I know I did too
much too fast. I have more lung/heart capacity than my legs were ready for.
Need to strengthen the front's of my legs some too...I'm a little flat
footed but not too bad and I "pronate" a touch, but again not too bad. They
checked me out at the store...Glad to hear that as well.

I'll have to give a report as things go along! Thanks again to everyone
that's commented and given websites and advice! Cheers! JJ

The tongue of the shoes (and box) says TN554. Not sure which is the model

I love you, marry me LOL Asics are the cats ass as far as I'm
concerned. Did you get the 2000 series?

I bet your shins feel better IMMEDIATELY, and you do more miles
    tonight than you plan on.

Run backwards to strengthen the front of your legs. Running uses the
muscles in the back of your legs, almost exclusively, so this will
help. Figure 8's (both directions) will help build up your ankles too
    if they feel weak.

Good to hear! I tried on three different pairs. The Asics were the first
and I mentioned to the sales guy that I'd heard (from this ng - you I think)
these were good shoes. He said he thought they were the best sellers they
had. Anyway, they felt great right outta the box. I tried two more pairs
(other brands) and they were nice too...but I went back to these. They just
seemed to feel "right" to me. Don't know why.

Can't wait to try them out! JJ

Well when selecting shoes, that's all that really counts. Shoes are as
individual as our feet are, that's why there is so many to chose from.

Sorry...already taken <blushing> but thanks! You made my day! ;-) I
though you mentioned that brand so I gravitated toward them as I was
looking. But then I just let the sales guy bring out whatever he thought
would work (didn't request anything) and that's what he brought out.
GT-2100. I even liked the color <smirk>. Some of those shoes are pretty
    darned ugly! ;-)

Man, I hope so. I ran in the shoes at the store and I could still feel
twinges but...even in the old shoes, if I could get past the initial pain
(which I could at first), as I warmed up, the shins felt better. So, I'm
    hoping that will happen.

Very helpful! Thanks! I was wondering what to do there...I asked the guy
at the store (he said the same thing you did - that running just doesn't
work the fronts of your legs) and he showed me some "toe lifts"...I'll do
those too. I can do that at my desk while working...

I'll do the 8's too...I have small, small ankles and, while the aerobics
(step and high/low) have done *wonders* for my ankle/calf strength...I still
sometimes feel a little "fragile" in the ankle area. Great suggestions!

  12. Well ok...

I just did a slightly shorter/slower run. But still did more than I was
planning to do. The shoes are GREAT! I can't believe how *comfortable*
they are! Amazing. And so very light too...

Ugh...why was I even trying to run in those other shoes? Oh well...live and
    learn.

So...I didn't go as far or quite as fast as I had been, but that's OK. As I
said, I was able to do more than I thought I would and actually *made*
myself go ahead and stop even though I think I could have done a bit more.

I'm sometimes the type to over due it (no, really! <grin>😉 - but these are
the only legs I have so...don't want to abuse them. I "iced" (frozen
towels) my shins/calves after the run just to help things out. I may take
an ibu or something too, but we'll see.

The shoes are definitely better and I think worth every penny! So, I'll
just go from here. Listen to what my shins are saying to me. I'll just run
at this pace/distance till I feel no pain really (I don't mean good
"workout" pain, I mean "an injury is eminent" pain). Then go from there.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! This is a great ng...Very inspiring.
I never really thought of myself as one who would like running...but I
really do so far. I have to get out and off the TM, and that's the plan
once my legs are a bit more ready for it. I think I would like that even
more...though with a good CD and my headphones, the TM isn't bad! Really!
    ;-)

    Take care all, JJ

Well realize that the treadmill is probably, no almost certainly a BIG
part of the problem. In treadmill running only certain muscles are
used, and they are isolated. In road or trail running you use many
    more muscles.

Ok this question bothers me. It takes no longer to run a half hour
outside than inside. You only being one state away I realize it's hot
as he** out there right now, but early mornings or evenings should
make that tolerable. So why the TM?
