New Rubber Spatulas

Are they heat resistant enough to stand zapping? That would
kill the mold.

Mine is 2-piece. The handle fits into a slot in the blade. I
didn't realize this at first but eventually mine got mold
inside. All you have to do is pull off the blade and rinse
it out really well, maybe use some Comet so that it kills
any spores. Then let it dry and put it back together. I've
only had to do this once in the 4 years or so that I've had
mine. It's not a big deal. Kate

If it has a wooden handle, you can pull the spatula head off
and wash it separately from the handle, which is what I've
always done. Spares the wood from the dishwasher and cleans
the notch the handle fits into.

Soaking in household beach kills most molds and funguses.

Take them apart to wash them, and allow to fully dry before
reinserting the handles. I wash mine by hand, nothing
sticks to them anyway so a light washing is all that's
needed. Mine say Pyrex Professional... I'm sure the heavy
lucite-like handle costs more than the silicone spatula
part... I'd be more interested in knowing if I can buy just
the spatula part.

Also tests with a cup of water and a vial of fruit flies
placed in a microwave and nuked till the water boiled
clearly showed some alive fruit flies. So there is no
certainy of sterilizing the mold or it's toxicins or spores.

I have tried that but the black gunk is still in there.

Look in the baby bottle isle... look for the bottle brushes
- with luck, it should be packaged with a smaller (cone
shaped) one meant to clean baby bottle nipples. It should
be the right size to clean out the gunk out that area.
