I am looking at gettng a new road bike. Currently riding a 15 year old second hand bike which has been great - rekindled my interest in riding. I am looking at doing 50 - 80km rides (currently doing 35 - 50km rides). No racing. I want a bike that has great performance and is comfy. Am looking at the Giant OCR 0 (2006 model) and the shop mentioned the OCR Composite - is it worth the $700 extra? Also thinking about the TCR 2 Composite but the comfort issue is pushing me towards the OCR.
Its nice to have such a terrible problem as to which of these wonderful bikes to get - they'll all feel incredible compared to what I'm riding now!!
Any thoughts, views or comments would be gratefully appreciated.

I had a look at the OCR1 (carbon rear triangle) and the OCR Composite. Again, there was $700 difference, but the Composite came with Ultegra and a Shimano 550 wheelset; the OCR1 with 105 and some other wheels. Got the Composite, but swapped the cassette for a 12/27. Best value full-carbon bike around - rides very nicely; climbs well. Eight kilos.
I didn't even consider the TCR. A bit too bum-up for my needs. Mountain biking is my normal riding genre. I plan to do a few road epics and fitness training rides so the OCR suited my needs better.

I have a OCR2 and find it fine for all sorts of riding so the OCR0 will be more than adequate. Yesterday I did the Otway Challenge 160km and am training for the Alpine Classic 200. Just remember its the motor that counts, there were a lot of flash bikes yesterday but not many flash riders, so don't get sucked into the componentry trap.

I recently got a TCR 2. Wanted an OCR zero but there was no stock my size. Tried the TCR2 and loved it. Last year's stock so $700 off retail (gotta love that). I think the zero would have been a more comfy ride but them's the breaks. TCR2 has full 105, composite forks and carbon seat-post etc. My first roadie since I was at high school (eons ago) so it's taking some time to adjust to the geometry but I'm very happy. In ther words of a Russian friend of mine "I like it... I like it a lot." Looked at the Trek and Avanti equivalents but the Giants seemed to be the best value for money.

GPL you crack me up. I joined in big time about 12 months ago when my new italian steed arrived. Since then, gear acquisitions have had to occur by stealthy means, often arriving under cover of night. "Oh no, no, they're not new - I got 'em second hand on ebay". "Oh no, no, its on appro from the LBS. If I dont like it I can take it back" "Oh no, no, thats Jono's wheelset. I've just borrowed 'em for the tri next month" etc etc.
When me or any of my mates make a significant purchase, we call it an attack of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome).
I'm in the same position. In London though. Mostly the same bikes for people on a budget and they include: Trek 1000, 1200, 1400. Specialized Allez (various models varying in price and spec) Giant OCRs LeMond Etape Scott Speedster S4 and S5 and some local brands that probably aren't in Oz: Dawes, Saracen, Claud Butler, Ridgeback.
I'm also doing the ebay thing and keeping an eye on forums for anyone selling used bikes.

To be honest, I have no idea... my carbie TCR bike has 'FSA Pro's or something on it which are sweeeet.. these are a little different.. still a carbon crank with an alloy spider.. and black! 🙂

It really is wrong how cheap they are on ebay. I got a carbon pair with a bottom bracket, for about what the bottom bracket was advertised for in australia *INC DELIVERY*.

No, what the LBS' sell them for in .au is wrong... Same can be said for Polar HRMs... My sums showed that I could get two 725s from ebay for what they go for here..
