New racer, younger and confused

    Ok, i have begun riding in racing bikes, recently turned 13 and know the basics of the bike. Only problem is the bike im getting is a Peugeot (Second hand sadly, he is waiting to see if i will enjoy it), a little bit older than my dads which is a Peugeot Reynolds 525 frame, the one i am considering has a 535 Reynolds i think. (No STI)

    He went with me to check it out, i found really that it was a good bike, my dad explained alot. The only problem was that the handlebars aren't like modern ones, its an olden tri bar with the brakes pointing towards the ground. We were wondering if we could get modern bars for it and still get the brakes put on. But its probably going to need a new stem. We are trying to get it for the $100 mark at the lowest as it has been in the Quokka for about 3weeks and it hasnt been sold.

    So the main question is if we get rid of the older handle bars and install newer ones, would it be worth it? Thanks.

    (I am guessing the brakes are Exo 300 or the Shodima things, im no shakes at brands)

    Where are you? Someone might be able to tell
    you about a shop selling second-hand bikes/parts.

    Talking to my dad, the brakes are Shimano 105 and the rims are Walbers or something close to it.

    Racing (drop-style) handlebars are cheap we have economy steel with alloy
    sleeve for 15$ & fresh tape starts at about $8, you should be able
    transfer the brake levers no problems with a 4 or 5mm allen key as long as
    they are the racer type, otherwise factor in another $29. Just don't think
    of adding STI gear/brake levers because that will blow your budget out of
    the water & unlikely to be compatible with the older gears .

    Well, i got the bike, and after viewin it closer i got all of the major parts names.

    ~Reynolds 351 Frame
    ~Shimano 105 Running Gears
    ~Shimano 105 Brakes
    ~Shimano Biopace 52 Crank
    ~Profile Handles & Tri-Bar
    ~Wolber Rims (Supposedly hard to find now, costly)
    ~RX Seat (Tryin to feel pro :P)

    We are getting new handles and no Tri-Bar, im putting up with it till Wednsday,other than that its got the price of $120 😄

    If it's in good condition then I reckon it's a good buy.

    The frame is Reynolds 531 (unless 351 is in fact a rare ancient tubeset
    I've never heard of).

    If the frame fits you, go for it.

    Yea the frame fits, ive been ridin it for two days, bringing it in for service on wednsday so yea i enjoy it, 55cm frame. Reynolds 531 isnt rare,just good quality

    Nick didn't say 531 was rare. He said 351 which is what you originally quoted it as being would have to be some rare frame. He was simply saying the frame is 531...not 351.
