I've just received my new Blackburn track pump. It looks the business! The heavy base is a boon, it's really stable, and being able to acommodate Presta and Scraeder just by turning the head (rather than taking it apart and turning the innards round) is a big plus. And havingthe gauge at the top is a fine recognition of my failing eyesight :-)

What sort of pump is it? I have sen Blackburn and Topeak spare available on the web, so they should be available through your LBS too. They seem to come as rebuild kits, ie all the little bits in the head rather than just individual seals.

Depending on make, you should be able to replace just the seal.

Don't they just sit on the end of a rubber tube? In what way can the pressure from one type of pump be incompatible with the pressure from another? That had never occured to me.

I have one of those types -- spare seals are available. Meantime, you could try degreasing the seal to get a bit more use from it: makes it grip valve better.

The head isn't compatible with Silca hose and Topeak hose isn't compatible with Silca pump, despite being supplied with various bits of hardware. I had to join the Topeak hose to the Silca hose using some of the bits supplied plus a jubilee clip. The extra long hose is handy!
* More reliable (tighter seal) but slower to use and the lever causes extreme pain if a finger happens to be in the way when you release it.

No. The different hose sizes had occurred to me and I was prepared to work around that. Thanks anyway for the advice. I really should just go for the replacement rubber for all sorts of reasons, but I'm getting really fond of the idea of a double head or even the Smarthead. Funny how I can insist on cycling rather than driving to the other end of town, but I'm too lazy to invert a bit of rubber when I swap bikes...

The Smarthead is very nice (as pump heads go.....)
My well used (13+ years) SKS (or is it Silca) track pump had a Schraeder head, with a separate bit that went inside if for Presta. A bit fiffly, but worked ok, but when the insert in the head gave up the ghost I replaced the whole lot with a Smarthead, not cheap, but a much better solution. -- Chris French, Leeds
Thanks for this link - we looked for Topeak rebuild kits when our Road Morphs failed - our LBS at the time said they didn't exist!
It's the first one that came up in a google. It was meant to be illustrative but as I have a Topeak it has proved to be useful since my pump could do with a new seal or two.
