  1. Hello-

I am a college student. I was on WW for a month over the summer and lost 10 pounds. It was great.
Then I go back to school and gain it back. It is hard being at a place where I can't control my
meals. I never know how things are prepared so it is tough to count points. Anyone have any advice
for me? Any will be appreciated. Thanks.

    Jenny
    195/195/150

PS: I am not sure what all the numbers mean so I guessed.

  2. you can control portions of what you are offered, you can pass on some
things and you can make friends with the kitchen to either get better
choices or to find out what the nutritional info is, Lee

  4. I remember being in college and having few choices on what to eat. I made most of the wrong
decisions and gained weight, but you can do it. Try to make some healthier choices out of what is
available. I know my cafeteria had fried food, asian food, and some pre-made sandwhiches available.
As far as counting points, I would try to make a good guess using the books in the starter kit for
dining out and food companion. I know even fast food places had some low-point options available.

  5. Welcome, Jenny,

You can't go too far wrong if you control the portion size, and stay away from the heavily sauced
(white sauced), fried, or super sweet foods. Eat more of the vegetables and fruit, and you'll
probably still lose even if you don't try to count points.

    Oh, and walk, walk, walk.

  6. Hi Jenny, welcome aboard! College choices are so much better today than back in my day. <g> All we
had a choice of was the meal of the day, heavy starch and not remotely good. My son is also in
college, has been very successfully losing weight. He says the food choices aren't really a problem
for him. They have salad bars now and leaner food choices available. I have no idea where you attend
school, but you might want to do some investigating. If you can't, try to stick with lean
meat/protein selections - skip the sauces/gravies. Load up on veggies and salads - they are
reasonably safe. Avoid mayo's - go for mustard instead on sandwiches. The biggest problem for
college students (I think) is those evening friendly pizza's and munchies .. and beer/soda's. <g>

How about loading up your room with safe foods? Veggies, fruits, lo point munchies ... salsa, baked
tortilla chips, etc. Then when you feel like you have to have something, you'll have some decent
    choices available.

You also have some very good activity at your disposal. Almost all colleges have fantastic fitness
centers now, and they are free for student use. USE THEM! Treadmills, stationary bikes, weights,
etc. ... great way to meet fellow students too. If you don't like that, get out and walk the campus.
My son makes a routine of the fitness center a few days of the week, on the other days he runs the
bicycle path or track or bleachers in the gym ... says he has even resorted to the running the
stairs in the dorm. The extra activity could very well offset any potential cafeteria damage. <g>

I wish you lots of luck and success. Post/frequent here if you are able, lots of support and
    guidance available at your fingertips.

  8. Hi Jenny, here's the welcome notice just for YOU!

Welcome to this great newsgroup where you'll receive lots of support, advice, and encouragement.
Once a week on Sundays, I post a list of links that newcomers to asdww might find useful. You may
want to look for that later in the week, or do a backwards search for last Sunday's post.

In the meantime, here's our FAQ: didian.comasdww our welcome notice:
    geocities.comindex.html

Frequently seen acronyms on this NG: NSV = Non-Scale Victory WOE = Way of Eating WOL = Way of Life

    Here's a short synopsis by Joyce -

How many points you can eat is only based on your current weight, as you lose weight those points
allowed will decrease (logic is that your body will need less to operate). At 183 pounds and based
on the new US flexpoints system, you will have a set point target of 24. In addition to this you are
allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout the week ... as well as any activity points you earn on
a particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target drops to 22 points ... weight reaches
150, target once again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of recommended per day, 5 servings of
fruit and veggies, minimum of 6 glasses of water.

To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer desktop calculator ...
    xmission.compoints.exe

WW suggests your ideal weight should be somewhere between 116 and 145 depending on your age.

The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily number of points. Points do not carry over
from day to day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your discretion ... can divide
them up and use daily (would be an additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a
special occassion during the week. Activity points are earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be
used on the day they are earned.

If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might be a great thing for you to look into.
There is lots of information available, as well as the food point database and journaling system.

    Joyce WW starting weight: 228.8 - 2/5/02 current weight: 133.3 Lifetime: 4/4/03

Disclaimer: As an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, asdww is unusual in that most of the people who
participate are respectful, considerate folks who freely share their experience with and knowledge
of WW, weight loss, and maintenance. Yet occasionally, spammers, trolls, and flamers show up to post
advertising, false information, insults, and the like. Nearly all of the time, people like this are
just trying to yank someone's chain. Most of the regulars on this newsgroup offer their experience
as a suggestion to try if you're stuck, but are quick to advise that each person has to find what
works for him/herself. If someone posts something that doesn't sound right to you, ask the
newsgroup, ask your WW leader, or ask your health professional.

Much success on your weight loss journey! WW works!
