  1. I've been lurking, and I thought I would introduce myself. I weighed
318.5 lbs this morning. I can't breath, I wear the same clothes for
months, my weight causes me amazing degrees of physical discomfort. I
am destrying the furniture, I can hardly reach my butt to wipe after I
    take a dump.

I am a stereotypical gluttonous American. I eat everything that
doesn't eat me first. I hide food from my family and eat it in
secret. I raid my kid's Easter baskets, Halloween bags, and Christmas
goodies. I eat several meals in secret aside from the three meals a
day I eat with my family. I obscess over food constantly. I worry
about where I can get it, what I will eat next, where I can hide it,
what I will eat, and if I can secure all that I can possibly eat.

I crave food, even when I have eaten so much I can hardly move. I
push my plate away, almost unable to breath, and start planning what I
will eat next. If there is food left on the table, it pains me that I
am simply too full to shove it in.

I wear a size 50 waist pant, 2X shirts, and I avoid any shopping for
clothes. Even though my wife and I have a combined income of over
$110,000 a year, I sneak to WalMart and buy ONE pair of "extended
size" pants and wear them until they fall apart as I am too reluctant
to admit my size and buy several pairs as a wardrobe. I always tell
myself that I'll just buy this one pair "until I lose weight". This
has been happening for over 27 years, now.

I snore so badly that my wife leaves our bed during the night and
sleeps on the sofa in the family room because she can't sleep over the
noise of my snoring, wheezing, grunting, and farting.

In preparation for today, I have read the Dr. Atkins' book twice all
the way from cover to cover. I have secured the appropriate foods for
this week, and already created an account on FitDay and begun logging
my intake. I've discussed the plan with my wife and two kids, who
agree help me on this life change.

Please wish the best for me. If you are religious, pray for my
success. I have written my daily affirmations and read them several
times already today. I was shamed by "The Biggest Loser" on TV. I
watched as they very subtly ridiculed the contestants, and I
identified with some of them and the emotional pain they felt. There
must be a reason I do what I do. There are issues that I will have to
face, emotional and physical challenges I have yet to even identify.

The concept of carb addiction and most of Dr. Atkin's research makes
sense. I have talked with my doctor, who flatly told me that pretty
much ANY diet can't be much more destructive than what I am currently
doing to myself. He did recount several patient's experiences he has
witnessed using Atkins. Several of my co-workers have had gastric
bypass, but I can't do that to myself. I know in my heart that HOW I
am eating is likely the key. Many of the posts here have resonated
with me, and I look forward to earning a place in this community.

Make no mistake, I am not here for a pity party, and I am not blaming
society, food manufacturers, restaurants, or anyone else. I suspect I
am on the brink of understanding a part of what makes me eat the way I
    do.

    Thanks to all of you.

  2. Hey there,
I was very moved by your post. You have clearly hit bottom and now are ready
to move upward. I used to weigh 353 pounds and know how you feel. I went
down to 210, reagained to 290 after 6 years and have stayed there for about
a year. I've been working on the gained weight again over the last year with
some setbacks due mainly to health issues. I'm currently at 280 and working
    at it.
You can do this and will.If you need any support other than this group feel
free to email me. I want you to succeed. I really do feel the depth of your
pain and despair. I would suggest one thing. Change your name from LeBlob to
something positive. Something that reflects your resolve and not your self
hatred. Small psychological steps like that can be as improtant as changes
    in diet.

    All the best.

  3. Will it be possible to remove carby things from your environment?

Also, may I suggest using the internet to order pants.

    Try: http://www.casualmale.com

I have no connection to Casual Male, except as customer.

  5. Over on Food Network website look for the low carb program. The
chef's biography says he lost 200 pounds on low carb. Recipes from
his show are posted on the website.

For me, it is the possibility of type 2 adult diabetes, and a
suspiciously high liver reading suggestive of fatty liver. That's the
    get-in-your face motivation.

I am using http:\\www.fitday.com for record keeping; plus writing it
down. I am keeping track only of calories and carbs. I've picked out
a daily allotment of calories with which I feel comfortable staying
    within.

Next. I am not weighing. It's a number. I can't wish it different,
rush it, or do anything but accept it. Feel like [censored] about it I
don't need. I think I'll pick a day like New Year's day to weigh.

Personally I think the greatest success comes from liking the foods on
the diet to lose the weight and, next, a willingness to incorporate
that into a permanent lifestyle. Man, I couldn't face baled hay for
    the rest of my life.

Best wishes to all of us. Remember, you're ok. God doesn't make
    junk.

  6. Hi you,,,,,,,,,,I'm sorry, but I just can't call you 'LeBlob',,,,,,the 1st
step in this Way of Life is to change your name, and do it now...Think of a
positive name that you can identify with and let us know. If you have a
mental picture of yourself as a failure, then so be it,,,,it will
happen,,,,,so give yourself a positive name. It takes courage to admit our
failings, so you have taken the 1st important step. Many others have been
very successful on Low carb and you can too.
Post every day and read, ask questions,,and drink tons of water.
    There are no stupid questions.
    Hang in there!

    Quoted message said:

And on top of all this you are a TROLL!

No, I am not a troll. FOB, check the email: it's real, unlike so many
in this group... I've lurked enough to know there are those out there
who see this type of life as entertainment to be prodded and kicked.

I can tell you about knees that are getting ready to blow out because
of the wqeight they carry. I can talk about reunions and company
events that never happened due to my shame over my physical size. I
can relate the times people have spoken without thinking first,
talking about "the fat guy over there" not realizing I was within
earshot. I've even passed on attending the funeral of a friend
because I couldn't fit into anytning appropriate the day of the
service. I can document at least one promotion at work that never
happened because I was too embarassed to engage in the after-hours
networking necessary to move one's career forward.

FOB, if being honest thows you off base, I understand. I know myself
well enough to zero in on what I'm doing wrong. I can explain it all
with precise and painful accuracy. I am tired of struggling to get
out of the sofa. I see the way I eat certain foods and lose sanity
shoving it into my mouth as if I were starving. I spent last night
with one heck of a headache. I assume the blood sugar is having a
festival as it falls. I felt my mood crash and was so touchy I
could've turned around and ripped the face off the guy behind me that
talked all the way through my daughter's vocal concert last night. No
high-carb food to comfort me means I'm an unhappy guy (for now). I
have a decent idea what to expect the next two weeks given the book
and the many posts I've read here. I was true to the book yesterday,
and I'm on track today. I bought a new scale, but I'll keep the
    weighing to once a week.

I'm not a troll, and I'm not unhappy you think so. I can be a tough
piece of $hit, and I didn't come here looking to have my hand held or
my feelings easily hurt. I see a need for me to butch up and take
responsibility for myself. I came here to begin executing a low carb

share your thoughts. I'd enjoy hearing from you, FOB, and all those
who can speak from experience and relate their successes and

LeBlob, I too was moved by your post. I can relate to some of what you've

  10. Well, here's what doesn't ring true to me:

You weigh 318 and can't breathe, can't wipe your butt. I have been as high
as 310 and didn't have either of these problems. Maybe my assumption that
you are of average height is wrong. Since you are a male I assume that you
are not a whole lot shorter than I am at 5'9", if you are a lot shorter then
    your claims are more believable.

The rest of your post also sounds rather over the top as well, but you could
just be an over the top person. I guess I don't sympathize well with your
shame and caring so much about what people say about you as I believe those
things don't matter. I was obese for close to 20 years but never felt that
people were laughing at me or poking fun or looking disgusted. I wore
colorful outfits and interesting jewelry and often was complimented on them.
If I had felt bad about my weight I would have done something about it even
if it wasn't as easy as low carbing, indeed there were many times in my life
that I had dieted just by cutting back and achieved a normal weight. I
didn't reach obesity until I was in my 50s and then it was a conscious
choice of eating what I wanted and living with the consequences. Physically
it created some problems, but it never bothered me mentally.

Good for you! Logging my intake turned out to be an excellent tool for
me to not only be accountable for what I eat, but to help plan my meals
and budget my carbs for each day. It helped me to see relationships to
weight, food allergies, appetite, and good/bad trends.

Cutting down significantly on carbs can make a HUGE difference in

I wish that were more true for me. I've been on Atkins for just about
eight months, and I'm 15 pounds short of my preliminary goal, having
    lost 63 pounds.

I'd been jogging three times a week before I started dieting, and have
continued doing so ever since. My pace is very slightly faster, and I
no longer have nagging back pain when I run (yay!), but I'm not
getting the huge increase in speed that I rather expected.

I don't snore loudly anymore. And my blood pressure has receded to
high normal, instead of elevated. Those are the good things.

My biggest problem, I suppose, is one of body perception. I'm much
happier now when I look in a mirror, but when I look down at my body I
still see too much in the way of breasts, hips, and thighs. Yuck. I
don't know if it's possible to get down to a size where I'd be happy
with what I see. I set 130 as a preliminary goal because I thought
that was achievable and was right in the middle of the prescribed
weight for my height (5'3"😉, but I wonder if 120 or 110 would actually
be better. Assuming I could actually reach it, that is.

Maybe I'd feel better if I went shopping for clothes. I wear jeans
most of the time, and all my size 14s are way too large, and I don't
have anything smaller except for one ancient size 13 that I have no
idea where it came from. That one is too small to wear, though I can
now squeeze myself into it. I'm probably a size 12 or maybe a 10, but
I don't really know -- especially since sizes are so variable.

I think "can't take it" is a bit different from "offended by it." When I
read the original post, it sounded to me like someone who had been reading
this group for a while and recognized that excuses would not be well

most new posters usually _are_ in denial, or making excuses, maybe that's

1500 or so calories, and after the headaches of the first day and
night, today has been pretty good. I'll wait until Monday AM to weigh
    for the first time.

FOB, I CAN tell you that yes, I have been the subject of ridicule.
Try waiting in line for over 2 hours with your son to ride a popular
ride at Great America (local theme park) and find out that once you
get to the front, you can't fasten the restraints so you have to get
off. My son got off too, he told me not to worry, he "didn't really
want to ride the ride", anyway. The folks nearby were not kind when
that public display took place. Made up story? Nope. Perhaps
colorful outfits and interesting jewelry would've made a difference?

I had one mom actually tell her son to "look for that fat guy" at an
elementary school party as a landmark so he could find the right row
of tables where his parents were sitting. She applogized immediately
when she realized I had overheard her. Made up? Nope.

I've been passed over at work for assignments and at least one
promotion because I couldn't engage in the off-hours athletics that
most of the department participates in. Networking is everything,
right? My suspicions were confirmed by one close friend on the
condition that he "never said it". Made up? Nope. Bitter? Nope. I
know what I need to do.

You've been to 310 and had none of those problems? GREAT! Drop me a
note and share a few success stories. Over the top? What must you
think of some of the regulars here? If you have been over 310 and not
felt some of what I've recounted, then you defy the experiences of 99%
of the obese people I've known and shared experiences with.

FOB, I don't want to start a pissing contest (THAT part of me I can
still reach, I just can't see it...), but the following is pretty
heavy ammunition to aim at someone who decided to walk into the room
    and introduce themselves:
    "troll"
    "drama queen"
    "your claims..."
"you have worse problems than being fat"

    Whew... strong stuff.

As I originally stated, I'm not looking for a pitty party or hand
holding. I told this group who and what I am. If you felt the need
to interpret my post for the rest of the members here and personnally
deterimine the validity, knock yourself out. Neither you, nor any of
the other more "aggressive" members of this forum scare me: I don't
    kill-file anyone.

You know, "FOB" has a particular meaing in 12-step circles (and if
you're shipping by common carrier!). Having lost a brother to
alcoholism, I am familiar with the 12 steps. There's a lot of
humility and modesty in them. Can you relate?

As for everyone else, thank you for your response. I Google my
questions so I don't ask obvious questions that re-invent the wheel
for the group. E-mail me if you like, respond online if you wish. I
feel as though I know some of you from the lurking, but as we all
know, we can all be anything we wish behind a keyboard...

As for the name, I like it. It works for me...
