Most the places I did when I did heating had a basement
with the furnace in one corner. The gas line typically
came in from the street. The main ran up the street and a
shut off exists on the front lawn of the house in case the
gas company wants to shut off your gas during a fire.
Most people put the furnace in the back of the basement so
the gas line ran the length of the house. I just needed to
tap in between the rafters you wanted the gas line to come
up between, run a line to th e kitchen and drill a hole in
the floor. A t-joint, a length of pipe, an L-joint and a
shut off value (sometimes a union joint as well).
Um, it's pretty obvious that the house has no basement (in
his 1st sentence the OP says the house is built on a slab,
and he also originally neglected to indicate about the
house being plumbed for natural gas), which is why I
suggested LP gas. And then in his 2nd post he decided to
impart that the house is indeed plumbed for natural gas,
which must mean the main enters directly into the dwelling,
and therefore should be a very simple matter to set in a
tee and extend a line anywhere in the house. And just
because others don't use propane is no reason it can't be
used for a kitchen stove... in spite of the fact that
others are willing to help by imparting good advice <modem>
is just being his usual obstinate self.
Gotta chuckle over that bit. Obstinate, eh?
I'm going to look into laying a line from the water
heater/boiler to the stove area, but I'm not sanguine that
it'll be as simple as you suppose because of the style of
construction we'll have to deal with. Briefly, the geometry
of the kitchen will necessitate right angle turns in all
three dimensions of space between the current gas line and
the stove. There is no attic for the line to run through,
though there may be some wiggle room between the ceiling and
the roof. Still the line may have to run through quite a few
studs and joists, and that may mean peeling back some very
well finished drywall.
As I said, I love the house to distraction, and my current
state of mind will not allow me to have at it with a
sheetrock tool.
I'll ask a plumber about getting gas after the budget shock
of the original purchase fades a bit.
