Hello,
Happy New Year all...
I'm newly dxed T2... does anyone notice feeling slightly depressed
after taking Splenda products? I have noticed a dip in mood after
trying Atkins shakes but don't notice anything with other Atkins
(non-Splenda) products.
Also notice *increased* mood after cutting carbs... again, could be
mere coincidence.
Neuropathy: Just before dx I would have pins and needles all over my
body about 1-3 hours after ingesting lots of breads, starches, etc.
Weird... last year nothing but increased urination at night. Do most of
you feel sick after having too many carbs? Tomatoes.. I heard those are
bad, which is a surprise.
There is a book called Conquering Diabetes by Anne Peters, MD. I was
really surprised when she recommended eating more fruits and
vegetables. She writes, "We recommend two servings of fruit and three
of vegetables every day." I know it depends on the individual
tolerance, but aren't most fruits bad? I read on here that some
tolerate strawberries better than oranges, grapes, etc.... that's fine
by me 🙂
Sorry for this disjointed post... hope it doesn't come across as
trollish. ----periphery, dxed T2, 2005

Could be it is the food that the Splenda is in! You mention Atkins. So I
presume that it is some kind of food containing Splenda? How is your BG
(blood glucose) after eating this stuff?Quoted message said:

It's not the cutting carbs that's the issue. It's your BG. Eat too many
carbs and your BG goes too high.Quoted message said:
Neuropathy: Just before dx I would have pins and needles all over my

test your BG?Quoted message said:

Really depends on the numbers.Quoted message said:

Well... You might have heard this. But where? And why? Why are they bad?
If you have arthritis, you might find increased pain when you eat
nightshades, such as tomatoes. Tomato sauce and even canned tomatoes can
have added sweeteners and will/can be higher in carbs than raw tomatoes.
Tomatoes contain carbs just like all other vegeteables. But as veggies go,
they are farily low in carbs.Quoted message said:

because you put something in a book doesn't make it true! I don't eat much
fruit because it makes me sick and I'm not talking about BG. I've been
trying grapefruit lately because that seems to work for me. But really
diabetes is a very much individual thing. Nobody can write a book and have
the dietary stuff apply to all of us. If only it were so simple!<snip>

I suggest you keep paying attention to it. With the splenda, you might try
the liquid stuff you can buy on the net....the packets contain fillers that
may bother you.Mood swings and depression to come in with shorter days...so depending on

They don't taste sweet, but they are. The thing is, unless you eat a lot of
them you shouldn't have problems. But most of the calories in a tomato
come from carbs, but they are a low calorie food. In normal amounts, you
should have to worry much about them.I heard those are

fruits are, for you.I have to assume that the people who recommend fruit to us diabetics are
not themselves diabetic, or they are on insulin and can compensate for
the spikes. One of the worst blood sugars I have ever seen was after
eating half a cantaloupe melon. Very much like what I'd get from pure
glucose.--Jenny

Thank you everyone for your helpful feedback. I realize I need to
watch which kinds of fruits to eat, as well as take into consideration
other health issues like heart, etc (I am 5'7", 170 lbs). I will try
the liq Splenda packets... hadn't thought of the possibility some other
ingredient might be causing the dip in mood.
Random thoughts: In dealing with this illness, it is only too easy to
have tunnel vision and only think of the carb numbers. I am T2, no meds
required, fasting BG at 128.. so I'm just barely a member here. My
doctor advised as a start to keep meals at 45 c or below with 15 c as a
snack... exercise, etc. (I wonder if I can just eat a pie and then run
afterwards... is this legal? Probably not 🙁 ) .... Fortunately I
suspected I was diabetic a while before dx... so the rough part is
over. I have been watching my diet for some time now... but before
being seen I ate "normally."
I am relieved that tomatoes aren't so bad.. I just bought a carb
handbook which outlines all for fruits, veggies, etc. I have just
purchased a meter and strips, so I will have to [censored] my finger which I
will not enjoy 🙁 But hopefully it will become part of a routine.
To anyone else out there who is newly dxed, I must say the time
being acquainted with D is the hardest... I found it much easier once I
set a pattern as far as diet... On the first days it was awful, because
I felt like I couldn't eat anything. Now I am keeping under 45 but
still feel like I shouldn't be eating this well. Today I wasn't so
good... I went above 60 on one of my meals and feel the familiar pins
and needles. I will get the dreaded meter out in an hour and test....
Holidays are no excuse... I just wish this illness allowed for the
occasional binge, like reg diets do. But I read the damage is
cumulative, so I guess I can't go over ever.. at least what the meter
allows.
As I have been watching my diet even before dx I have found it
extremely tempting to binge on occasion... I wish we could all be good
for a month and then have a one day free-for-all day but i guess the
disease doesn't work that way. I know I must discipline myself on
holidays and with friends, or eating out..... I just wonder if going
over slightly on occasion won't hurt me in the long run... or does
control of D mean sticking religiously? I wish diabetes were forgiving
and you could get points for sticking with it so long.... but I guess
it's not. Oh well.... I just feel very lucky to have found this group. Thanks again, and Happy New Year! ----periphery, dxed T2, 2005, fbg 128

It's not the cutting carbs that's the issue. It's your BG. Eat too many
carbs and your BG goes too high.I have a predisposition to depression (seasonal affective), so this
time of year normally gets me down. I have felt a bit lifted lately --
this is the first time in years.Quoted message said:

There was a book that I can't recall the title of... it was by a man
who devised a diet for T2 diabetics... it wasn't Atkins or SB. I think
he was saying that tomatoes are not something to take lightly, like
broccoli - iow, don't eat loads of them... But I just purchased a carb
book which doesn't put them too high.Quoted message said:

Hello, periphery
5'7", 170 lbs is probably a bit out of balance for a diabetic. May I suggest
5'7" 135 lbs as an alternative. And it would be better if most of those
pounds were muscle. It might be better if you were walking after every meal. And a little light
weight training would not be out of order. Maybe some pushups and situps
every other day.170# at 5'7" is really not serving your future as well as another plan and
routine might.I'm sorry to say that I was 5'7 3/4" at 175 when I had my good news. I went
down to 130# and then came back up to 145# which is pretty good for me for
the most part. I sometimes go up to 149#, but quickly get my weight back
down to 145# when that happens. But 135# wasn't that bad, and you are a bit
shorter than I am, and I'm also a man and more easily able to gain muscle
than a woman. It would be a good idea to pickup something heavy from time to
time for osterperosis purposes as well.Aa far as losing weight to get down from there, I initially had a very
restrictive diet that limited me to 1200 cal. per day with the excercise.
This was slightly extreme and might not suit your temperment. I was able to
do it, however, and lost the weight from 175 to 130 in a very short time
without losing any brain function. I did have to relearn a lot of eating
patterns. Salad with vinegar and oil dressing became a staple. Lettuse,
tomatoe, olive, broccoli, spinich, nuts and croutons. Your basic soup and
salad type of meal. You might be surprised how filling and satisying such a
thing can be. Also, a little grilled wild salmon when you can find it is
good. For a redmeat meal, American Bison is very nice. Nuts such as Walnuts
and Almonds are vital for staving off humger attacks. Please change your way of eating and move into another manner of living.
People might like to see you in another twenty years. I know of many people
who are not around or who are unable to be themselves anymore from strokes.
Not good.regards,
rudy
