  1. It's been pointed out how irresponsible it is to sell cars with TV ads
showing drivers cruising at impossible speeds down city streets.
Frightening images indeed, but at least the drivers in those ads
seemed to be watching the road.

Tonight was aired an ad by GM showing exuberant drivers playing
Frisbee out their car windows as they drive around city streets. You
thought driving 100 mph around town looked frighteningly
irresponsible? GM gives your sensibilities the finger, with happy
music and drivers aren't even looking at the road as they enjoy their
    vehicles.

    Look out.

Yes, I'm sure that many drivers will do what they saw on tv. "Hey,
good idea! Let's go try it!".

    Not.

Thanks for your on-topic post. I'll be ignoring this thread now...

Well, it's not bicycle specific, but I think it's pertinent. Motor
vehicles _are_ sold by ads that cater to irresponsibility, as well as
    ridiculous fantasy.

I don't mind if their auto fantasies lure gorgeous women, or produce
kids smiling brightly all through a five hour drive.

But the fantasy that you can drive too fast for conditions because of
your new ABS, or night vision system, or headlights? No, that's
irresponsible, as is the "sliding sideways in the wilderness" footage
that's used to sell SUVs to husbands of soccer moms.

In fact, I'm not very fond of the scenes showing the beautiful
wilderness lake that last seen by Lewis & Clark, that you can get to
since you've bought a big SUV.

Some of the fantasy is a harmless way of pulling in suckers. Some is
regrettable, in that it gets more motor vehicles into places that used
to be quiet. But the macho driving nonsense - or, in the case now
mentioned, the stupid driving nonsense - is promoting dangerous
behavior. And cyclists are among the people that behavior endangers.

    One word: "Jackass."

Johnny Knoxville and Steve-o's antics have spawned a raft of
imitators--kids doing idiot stunts being filmed by their buddies with
    DV camcorders.

I remember when they warned kids "DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME"

These days, they encourage you to try it--as long as you send them
    footage.

Sorry that could have used an "OT" warning at the very least.

I was spouting about the ad here because I thought I remembered
reading a recent post with a bicyclist's reaction to car ads that show
reckless city street driving. Upon further investigation I realize I
was thinking about, and following up on this article:

    http://www.bicyclinglife.com/NewsAndViews/Prodriver.htm

Neither a post here nor even very recent. Looking at it again, I guess
the article isn't very specifically related to biking either.

What's the fun of lowering the bar if you can't watch the idiots
bumping their heads trying to crawl under it.

BikeContent: BitTorrent is nice, no tv and yet I'm waiting the TDF
