if it's really wet.

No problem, but wear boots rather than fabric boots - a bugger to clean the
dirt off afterwards

Tricky one t oanswer about such a large area I know, but any local
knowledge would be very useful.

I was there yesterday (Wed) and it was fine, some mud but nothing deep. I
was not sticking to the gravel paths either. Some of the rides were quite
muddy and slippery, and in this case you are often better off heading thru
the trees.

I started in one of the car parks at Emery Down SU281083 (just west of
Lyndhurst) and went NW to the ponds at Stoney Cross SU252111. Downside to
this was the road noise from the adjacent A31, but I wanted to go there as
I remember going there with my Father to fly his model seaplane.

Then SW to the Canadian Memorial SU241093 (http://www.new-forest-
tourism.com/canadian%20memorial.htm) and back to the car via the Portugese
fireplace SU265078 (http://www.new-forest-tourism.com/portugese%
20fireplace.htm). Just under 10 miles in fabulous weather. Saw four
cyclists, three walkers, one Jay and one Deer.

I noticed that the A35 is closed at Holmsley (N end was closed at
SU262058), and as I normally avoid going too close to the main roads
because of the noise, that might be a good place to walk to, while it is
closed.

Holmsley, New Forest: Major improvement work continues between Forest Lodge
and Wilverley Post. The road is closed from Wilverley Post to the Holmsley
junction near the bridge. This work is due to be completed by 13th Nov but
is weather-dependent, so it may overrun if we get a particularly wet spell.
Once this work is complete, there will be five days of daytime road
closures from the Holmsley junction to the junction of the B3058 (the road
to Bashley).

The A35 hasn't affected the number of walkers in that immediate area - it's
one of my weekly routes. The local tea rooms remains as busy as ever

I was thinking more about the lack of traffic noise. I went there on
Sunday, and walked alongside the road for a while and it was very quiet,
with only the occasional bit of local traffic.
