new fixie!

I may be wrong (a television screen doesn't have the
resolution of a true monitor) but I see what looks like
cantilever bosses on the front and rear forks. Why not
try those?

Yes, this frame was meant for cantis, but I had the calipers
and I kind of prefer them. I also thought the bare
cantilever bosses were cute and gave the bike character. I
may give in and go with cantis though, since it appears that
calipers on the rear will be even more of a kludge.

I had assumed that the frame would be spaced so as to allow
either cantis or calipers, but this was incorrect as another
Benjamin (Weiner) pointed out.

There is no cable housing stop for cantilevers on the
rear; I assume it originally had one hanging off the seat-
post binder bolt. I should be able to find one of these
fairly easily, and I do have one partial set of cantis
hanging around.

What's difficult about a stack of washers and two flat
pieces of metal? Or are you talking about machining
something nicer?

Anyway, for me it's academic, now that I've gone the
cantilever route.

It's pretty much finished now, except for a few paint touch
ups that I want to do at some point. By popular demand, it
now has cantilever brakes (with stylin' red koolstop pads).
I can now controllably put my back wheel in the air with a
fairly light squeeze of the front brakes.

Hmm, chain is a bit slack at the moment; I'll have to
tighten that up a bit.

Those are randonneur style handlebars by the way, which I
rescued from a bin at Our Community Bikes. I'm quite liking
the way they feel. I think I like them better than the
"ergo" bars on my randonneur bike...
