  1. Hi All, I recently signed up to do a charity ride for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, nothing unusual there until you know I havn't riden a bike since I was a child!! 8 weeks in and I'm obsessed, I love it! I've bought myself a Specialized Vita and all the equipment plus more!!

The event is 47 miles, I've got up to 20 but I've got a bit stuck. Should I keep increasing my miles or should I stick to 20 for a while and work on speed? I'm only averaging 12 mph which seems pretty slow. The ride is in August so I feel like time is running out.

Any advise would be greatly appreiciated
    Thanks

Sounds like you're on the right track and shouldn't have any problem with your August ride.

In terms of training, just keep riding ideally four or five days per week even if some of those are short rides. Ride longer when you have the time and the mood strikes you, explore new routes and enjoy getting further from home on the bike. Get used to eating and drinking enough during those longer rides as it'll come in handy during the three to four hours you'll be on the bike during your charity ride.

Experiment with pushing the pace a bit when you feel good or to make more out of some of the shorter rides when you don't have so much time. Not sprints and ridiculously hard short efforts, but see if you can roll a bit faster along some open stretches of road for 10, 15 or more minutes to get used to a bit more effort on the bike.

But mostly ride a lot and pick rides that are fun for you so that you stick with it and get a lot of time on the bike. Learn to change flats, ride safely, go up and down hills with confidence and ideally how to ride with and around other riders. If you've already done 20 miles then the 47 mile ride is well within your range especially with 8 or more weeks to go till the event.

    Good luck,
    -Dave

  3. Thanks for this Dave

I defo need to get out more during the week I havn't been getting out enough! I also need to find more routes just for a change of scenery! However hitting the 20 miles has really built my confidence.

Glad I found this site 🙂

  4. I'm guessing you have a bike computer since you know how many miles you ride and your average speed.

So, I'd say to use those tips Dave gave you and compete against yourself over the next few weeks.

If you currently can do 20 miles and average 12 mph, see if you can get that average mph up to 13.

And now that you can ride 20 miles, set a goal to ride 30 miles. Then try to ride that 30 miles faster.

The most important thing is too have fun and it's sounds like you are. Good for you and good luck to you on the charity ride! 😎

  5. Hi 64paramount!

Thank you for your advise, I'm going to try everything you and Dave have suggested. I do have a computer I'd be at a loss without it!! Before I no it I'll be whizzing around 30/40 miles!! 😄

  6. You're on the right track with the suggestions posted above. Definitely set targets to hit. Like Distances of 25, 30, etc. Won't be long before you look back and say....wow. Wasn't as far fetched as I thought.

It was about 11wks ago when I started my training. Had a hard time hitting avg speeds of 28-29kmhr. Now I've surpassed that and am working on breaking the 35kmhr barrier. Hopefully I'll see some short rides In a few months that show high 30's fr avg speed. That's my goal!

Best advice I've heard over and over. "keep riding". Hard to beat time in th saddle.
