Whether or not those bikes are comfortable for you will depend on how well
they fit your body and your prefered riding position. All are well made, but
they have different geometries from each other and from more common road
bikes. You should take some test rides and decide what fits you best.

is that roubaix for real? i've seen them, and i just can't imagine
that those little elastomer blobs do anything but look expensive
and high-tech.

i've tried 'em all: CF, Alu, Ti and that lowest of tech: Fe.
at this point, the cannondale is in a landfill somewhere, the
lightspeed ended up on ebay, the kestrel is hanging on the
bedroom wall, and the paramount sees a few thousand miles of
road every year.

I'm thinking about a Trek Pilot. I know folks say fit counts and that is
something I would not argue about, but the Pilot has a lot of thought
going into making the bike more comfortable. With the long reach breaks
you can easily get 28 tires in and have ample room for full fenders (I
live in Oregon). The Klein Reve and Trek will soon have a similar bike
using the spa idea seem like they would be good for bumps, but what
frustrates me is the chip seal. I want to get rid of the buzz.
I tried the vibration dampening gadgets that the Pilot has in the handle
bars on my Klein Quantum (definition of stiff frame with skinny tires)
and I think it made a difference. I have a problem with the Pilot. I like
a rack on the back and it won't take one. The lbs guy said to put an
alumumin seat tube in place of teh carbon fiber seat tube and hand a rake
off that, but I think the more carbon you have the less road buzz you
have.

Why not? My Pilot has eyelets on the dropouts, and the racks I
remember have a brake bolt mounting option to anchor the top. Maybe
they don't make racks like that any more?

Pat: If the fit is right, the Klein Reve might just be the ticket. I've put
a number of miles on one, and it's as close to the "killer app" (for ride
comfort and performance combo) that I've tried. I really think they got that
one right; makes a lot more sense than trying to do something funny with the
tubes. Best thing is to take one for a test ride.

My personal observations can be found at
http://www.chainreaction.com/revvedupklien.htm. It might not be the easiest
bike to find though, as Klein availability is somewhat limited (both in
production and number of dealers). Plus, you may have to get past people at
shops who really don't understand the bike (because they haven't ridden
one).

That's an great old Kirtland, mounted on a Carradice SQR unit.

Good for when I don't need the big Carradice Nelson Longflap that
carries my Ti Powerbook on my commute.

It's got room for a windbreaker, full-finger gloves and some lunch, as
well as the usual tools and spare tube.

Very nice bag, too bad they don't make them anymore, though the original
mounting system was too complicated for many people to figure out.

Actually I have a Strada/Corsa but am considering a DF for hilly rides.

Is a "Strada/Corsa" a Strada with a hard-shell seat replacing the mesh
seat? (I saw a couple of bikes converted this way prior to the
introduction of the Corsa.)
