New Clipless pedal shoes

This may seem like a stupid question but,....will these shoes work with speedplay pedals? I found a pair of pedals for sale used and got the shoes for my birthday. They dont have cleats but they are a great price and it would justify ordering the cleats if they would work. Thanks in advance.

Check with your local bike shop to see if the bolt pattern on the shoe will work with the speedplay pedals

Yeah, I have been going around recently and I tell ya the answers vary. I was wondering if someone here might know.

There are two common kinds of bolt patterns: 2-hole for mountain biking cleats such as SPD and 3-hole or 4-hole for road cleats such as Look, SPD-SL, etc.

Speedplay makes both MTB and road pedals. Speedplay Frogs are their MTB pedal and the corresponding cleats are compatible with the 2-hole Shimano shoes you are looking at. Speedplay Zero and X series are road pedals and require a 3-hole or 4-hole road shoe.

You can't really buy just speedplay 'pedals' -- when you do you are also buying the cleats. They bolt onto the bottom of the shoes, and if SPD cleats are already on the shoes the pattern will work with the speedplays. Have fun.

Those are road pedals and the cleats will not fit on your 2-hole MTB shoes. Stick with SPD and you will be OK or get road shoes. There are a number of double-sided SPD pedals that are light and work very well. Or you can get pedals that are SPD on one side and platform on the other if you want to be able to ride using street shoes from time to time.

Are you sure they wont work? I ask the guy who sold the shoes if those pedals would work and he said yes. Maybe he was wrong.

I have to tell ya the experience is a little frustrating. I went to the local shops and their selection was terrible. One guy actually told me to by them from performance!

I thought I was buying road shoes. I really did not want to spend 150 on shoes alone. If you guys can post some ideas for road shoes that would be really helpful. I can send those back if needed.

You did not say if you have Speedplay Frogs or one of the other Speedplay models. Frogs would work with your shoes and the others will not.

Most bike shops cannot afford to stock a wide range of shoes in all the necessary sizes.

You should be aware that road shoes are uncomfortable to walk in since the cleats stick out from the sole of the shoe and you have to walk on your heels. In addition, the cleats are fragile enough that walking on them will wear them down rapidly unless you get rubber covers for them which make them even harder to walk on. Speedplays are notorious for having problems with dirt getting into the cleat making it hard to click in if you walk around on them without covers. This is not an issue if you are spending hours on the bike and only stopping occasionally, but it is a problem if you are biking somewhere and then walking a lot. The shoes you got have a recessed cleat so you can walk around in them if you want. SPD pedals are relatively inexpensive compared to road pedals. I have both SPD-SL and SPD pedals and in all honesty do not feel much of a difference in comfort or convenience between them. The MTB shoes are a lot easier to walk in however.

I think you are right. I have been looking alot and the pedals I was looking at wont work.......🙁 I just need some pedals that will, I guess. Now I am even more confused. Thanks for the link by the way.
