New Cleats

Get cleat covers. Yes, KEO cleats wear quite fast if you walk in them.
Don't walk in them without cleat covers. The cleat covers don't come with
new cleats, they're separate, but not expensive.

Cleat covers are essential - for safety as well as reducing wear. You never
know when and where you'll have to walk. Imagine carrying your bike up some
slippery steep stone steps.

Unfortunately the cleat(s) will still wear out all too quickly from putting
foot/feet down at stops. That's the price we pay.

Keo cleats do often come with covers - most economical way of getting them.
Find sets on eBay for around a tenner.

Excellent -- thanks, guys... One other question: When the cleats say
they have 0, 4.5 or 9 degrees of float, what does this mean? My guess
was that 0 degrees would be really stiff and you couldn't wiggle your
feet around at all, whereas 9 would give you, well, 9 degrees of
radial movement.

I would think so as well. I haven't tried the black (0 deg) cleats, but I
haven't tried putting my head in a lit oven either :-)

I think it's 9 degrees of free rotational movement in total.

I have Look Keo's too, which I love. I came from getting dead toes with
SPD's to the comfort and positive support of Keo pedals, but the wear does
irritate me.

I notice more and more stores are stocking the cleats with covers, which are
*essential* to prevent excess wear - but they do wear quite badly from
putting one's feet down when stopped, etc. Be aware also that the pedals,
being polyamide, wear too. I've just replaced mine after 8,000 miles and a
year of use. Grit and dust between the cleat and pedal wear both away, but I
guess it's the price one pays for such a comfortable system.

I've often mused that if they made the cleats from Ti or even Al alloy and
pedals from similar if they'd be any better...
