New chain woes: Advice needed

Are the front chainrings worn or is the chain 8 speed
compatible.

The new cassette may not be in the same horizontal position
as the old one, you may need to adjust the rear derailleur
to accommodate the change.

Both the above posts are relevant. However, I've also known
people to route the chain *outside* the moulded guides on
the jockey arm of the rear mech (which are designed to
prevent the chain from coming off the jockey wheels). Sorry
if this is patronising, but it may be worth checking that
the chain is running only on the jockey wheels of the mech!
This problem causes exactly the symptoms you've described.

There is also a little arm mid-way between the 2 jockey-
wheels on the front of the derailleur. The chain should go
under, not over it (so that it is not touching). A 'friend'
has been known to make this mistake.

Also, when you join the chain, it's possible to lock the
links together too tightly. If you do this, the chain will
skip and you have to loosen the offending join until it
moves easily.

Thanks for all your advice....

When I can afford the slight expense I'm going to take it
down to the bikeshop and ask them to show me how to do it if
they have a spare 10 mins..
