Hmmm...now while I don't doubt that Mr. Mitchell has produced some
truly remarkable kneejerk tossery in the past, I'd be inclined to
suggest that if someone has three separate incidents that nearly wrote
them off in the space of five minutes then it actually probably *was*
their fault. I cover 150-200km per week and I have someone startle me
perhaps once every month or two. If you're being frightened every time
you go out, there's really only one common element.

I've had nothing for six months, then three life-threateners in one trip
    home.

    Stats: just probabilities, not certainties.

Granted, which is why I said probably their fault rather than definitely
their fault. I've had two moments inside half a kilometre myself, but that
was once. I wouldn't be holding that up as representitive of what I have to
deal with in traffic on a day to day basis.

I recognise the name... is Neil Mitchell a journo for one of the papers,
    as well?

    Tam.

I think he used to run the Melbourne Herald before he started on radio.

He definitely started as a print journo

Neil has the gift of the gab, and takes
delight in out-talking anyone attempting to reason with him or ridicule him.
If he can't out talk them, then he uses the power of "the big red switch"
and cuts them off in mid stride. If he doesn't do that, then he ridicules
them after they have hung up, and by airing subsequent rants against the
unfortunate caller by other listeners. .

he also has the knack of cracking a (bad) gag when he's losing an argument, which lightens things up

I reckon he's barely more than a 'timeslot hit', in that he'd suffer without the huge ratings of the breakfast show. It was telling a few years ago when 3aw dumped the ad break to shorten the 8:30am news to about 3 minutes. 3aw have been huge in breakfast ratings for about 25 years; and Mitchell jumped on the coattails of Hinch when he started.

At one stage he was sports editor of the Melbourne Age. Not a lot of
    cycling coverage in those days.

I'd have trouble, calling in on that show. I wouldn't be able to argue.
I'd just say something nasty, like, "So, Neil, exactly how small is your
penis, really? Sounds like you're under an inch, man, that's tragic.
You know, cycling knicks would make it look bigger."
