I got a brand new 2005 OCR1 in December for $1600 with shimano shoes, computer (with cadence), bottles, cages and a CO2 pump. Was the best deal I could find anywhere for a new 105 equipped bike.

I managed in nov 05 to buy a OCR 1 for $1200 new, all up $1600 with every extra i could think of. Its been a good bike for me (my first) and seen many a mile.

I think if you look around for the "old" model you can really save lots.

Check out the bicycle entrenpreneurs, they build their own bikes (amiata's) which i bought with shoes, computer, bottle cages, decent lock etc for $1250. I was in the same situation and was looking at the ocr2 and an avanti of the same spec. The bike I bought has the same components as both those bikes but much cheaper. One hint on those bikes is upgrade the tyres straight away, makes a huge difference (michelin prorace 2). Which uni do u go to?

Thanx for all the help. I attend UWA. The funds to buy a bike may not free up immediately so I was wondering when the sales are normally on for bikes. I presume it would be during our winter period?

Though I love Cannondales I think you get more for your $ in a Trek. I feel they make the best budget bikes IMO. Specialized and Giant aren't far off.

Usually around August to October.

Some manufacturers try to flog off all of their stock in July to capitalise on the interest generated by the Tour.

Sales are from now till June.. Today I saw an OCR3 in Runners World for below $800!!! 😎 Naturally at the end of season not all colours and sizes are available.. 😄

Anywho, is it too much if my budget is $2000 for newbie?
My old bike so far has been 9 years old, so I'm thinking to get a bike that will serve me for years on.

Guys, be aware the 2006 OCR specials are almost all gone. A friend got one last week for $780 (OCR3).

It would be nice to have a $2000 budget to start on. I don't think its too much, plus buying a more expensive bike 'should' have a longer life span, components should be of better quality and durability. Plus if its goin to last you for 10yrs its only a $200 dollar a year purchase, not too much unless you get hit by the bug and need to upgrade again, but quicker this time:eek: !
