It's not the tires, it's the rim strip. I suspect you have a thick rim
strip installed- Velox tape or similar. Using plastic rim strips such
as those available from Performance:

will allow the bead of the tire to fall farther into the middle of the
rim, allowing the bead to be pulled off more easily.

I had a heck of a time with MA-40's and Continental tires until I
installed thinner rim strips. After that, piece of cake.

Also, I'd consider 700x25's to be too small for a reliable commuter
bike. I'd use at least a 700x28 if not a 700x32. If you keep them
inflated, you won't gain that much rolling resistance.

Thanks. I believe you're correct, it's Velox tape. I'll try a thinner
plastic rim strip - good idea. As far as the tires go, a true 700x25 will
be about the max I can fit with this 80's racer rig, heck it won't even have
gears or brakes! My year-round commuter does have 28c tires, fenders,
gears, brakes, etc and really enjoys getting all dressed up.

Agree, I use a thin velox cotton tape and Avocet Fasgrip 700x25 (formerly
called 700x28) and NEVER have a problem mounting tires.

If you do have problems mounting, get yourself and VAR tire lever, you'll
never regret it!

Yes, the VAR levers enabled me to get the tires off - just barely. They're
certainly a can't-do-without item.

Sounds like I'll have to find a thinner (plastic) rim strip. The width of
the cotton Velox appears to be fine in this case.

Agreed. I have no problems with my other Mavics rims - both road and
mountain. My MA2's, T217's and Open Pro's all work fine. I'll have to take
a peak at the Avocet Fasgrips tires too. Any excuse to try some different
rubber is OK by me 🙂

Touring 700x32 with the Velox rim strip. It is a tight fit, but I
haven't had to use levers yet. personally I rarely use levers to change
a flat and this from a guy who does it 10 or more times per day during
the summer.
I personally recommend just toughening up and getting stronger thumbs.

Here's a thought... I recently read somewhere a suggestion of putting
tyres in the dryer for a few minutes before mounting them the first
time. Have you tried that?

I haven't done that but I have put the tires in the hot sun first.
I've got reasonably strong hands and good technique for changing out
tires. My friend has the best solution for mounting new kevlar bead
tires. He brings them to me.

some Conti TopTourings are tight, some loose. I have had both on my MA2
(like MA40 section I think) also with Velox tape. It is probably just
sample variation, but the old German ones were impossibly tight without
levers, the newer Thai versions are just right. I never worried because
I went around France and New Zealand on the tight ones without any
punctures that I can remember.
