Pythons are good for most dry/hard conditions. Probably not the greatest on roots though. I've moved from Pythons to WTB ExiWolfs - they've got better grip in looser stuff, especially in turns.

My first recommendation is the Continental Explorer. I have also heard nothing but good reviews for the Panaracer Fire Xc, but I have never tried them myself.

Panaracer Cinders are even better. That is, they are better on the trails. They're not so good of a cross tire for the road.

Pythons are fast(Airlight version) and light(around 495 gr-kevlar). I have used them exclusively for the past three years and do love them. I ride in similar conditions here in Ontario, Canada. They don't do too well when the going get really wet, but when it's dry; they fly. I have also tried the Kenda Khariama Lite(front and rear specific) and did like them also. They were my messy-condition tires when the Pythons did not suit the condition. They gripped better on turns than the Pythons did and offers a better bite on rocky/root sections. But when it came to race time; I went for my Pythons(rain or shine). I have now converted strickly over to Tubeless and still run Pythons. Although I do like the Spiders for their sheer bite factor. They're a bit heavier, but spins suprisingly well on flats. One last note on the Pythons; mount them in the opposite direction on the rims. They actually preform better for braking. Best of luck!

I ride WTB Weirwolves. Not the lightest or fastest rolling tire. But they are like trail velcro. I doubt I will ever put different tires on any of my bikes ever. I dont race MTB, so I the weight and rolling resistance dont bother me. I just wanna get to the top.

WTB Weirwolf Races are loads better and have a lot more traction for high and low speed cornering, plus they last forever and don't wear out really fast because they have a durable rubber compound.
