I am going to Mauritius next month and will be doing quite a bit of cycling for 4-5 hours per day (22-27 degrees, humid and sticky).
I need to get some cycling shorts and would prefer baggy shorts.
Can i wear padded lycra cycling shorts under normal board shorts? Do baggy cycling shorts normally have padding? Do you think i will need lots of padding as i haven't been cycling properley for a few years? Can i just wear under shorts with normal board shorts?
yes to pretty much all your questions baggy cycling shorts have padding. you can wear the lycra style on the bottom and have a baggy short on top, but the more layers you have the more uncortable it is going to be. you want to have the least amount of rubbing and friction. that is the key to comfort. also do not wera underwear with the shorts. a common mistake a lot of people do finally wear vasline on your butt. that helps in moisturizing the skin and preventing irritation. hope that helps

Yes, you can wear padded lyrcra shorts under normal shorts if you prefer or you can just buy baggy shorts with good padding.
I think you should get shorts with good padding and if you prefer baggy shorts, then just get baggy shorts with good padding.
There are many on-line stores that sell padded baggy shorts for cycling and below is a link to one of those stores and their current selection of baggy shorts.

Oh hell no. Back in the day when cycling shoes had wooden soles, laces and toe clips and straps were used, cycling shorts has real chamois leather which would often need a bit of chamois cream to get it nice and soft after washing but sticking a mineral oil and parrafin based goop on your sweet cheeks and then sitting on it and rubbing it in, along with the sweat, is not required for the modern synthetic chamois in new shorts nor is it too good for the skin either.
An easier method to prevent chaffing and irritation - don't be a cheapwad and don't be in a hurry when buying shorts. Skimpy lycra and a bad fit = the sucks. Good shorts means that my happy bits are still happy even after 12+ hours in the saddle.
I like to use a little Gold Bond medicated powder in my shorts. It definitely helps, but there's no replacement for time in the saddle to get used to it.
DO NOT try to save money and buy cheap on this part. Especially if you plan on 4+ hours in the saddle. Baggy or not, make sure you get quality. IMO, my a$$ and the family jewels are worth spending $100-$150 on a good pair.
Also +1 on skipping the vaseline... unless you have other plans after the ride .
Hi adas100, actually good quality padded underwear, plus short skins compression underwear under your padded underwear, with quality boardshorts (like billabong or quicksilver) over, and quality zinc or aloe powder, works very well :-)
