With some advice from this newsgroup (and google), I figured I should
be doing straight leg lifts to strenghten the muscles as a prohibitive
measure.
Since this is the first time I've ever tried doing these exercises.
So, typically, how long should I keep this up before I can
realistically start running again without injuring the knee? 2 weeks?
a Month?
What Doug said regarding rebuilding. But as for how long you do leg
lifts, you might consider them a part of your running training for
awhile, even after you're back. If you've been out for 2 months now,
that suggests it might take a while to rebuild the strength.
One guy here used to describe the number that he did as "ad nauseum".
The first time someone showed me the drill after I'd had knee problems
for several years (backpacking), the problem cleared up within about a
week or so (I was a lot younger then). I get bored pretty easily and
don't remember doing more than about 10 on each leg.
I rarely do them now because of an assortment of higher priority drills,
but occasionally (maybe once every 4-6 months) I might feel a slight
twinge in knee, remember that I haven't done any leg lifts in awhile,
start doing them one or two times / day for a week or so in conjunction
with backing off slightly for a day or two. I do try to remember to do
at least some about once a week or so for good measure - an apple a day ...
