If I had the book, it could also take me months to read it. I used to
read at least a book a day, but I just have no time to myself any more.
It's one of the most difficult things for me, adapting to parenthood, that
my favourite pastime of curling up with a good book and a cat in my lap
    has gone out the window.

If it's any consolation, I've had about 6 years of being able to read in the
evening, but now they're 13 & 10 they want to go to bed later than I do, or
snuggle in my bed for a girlie chat... We have a fairly strict rule that
they need to be in their own bedrooms by 8:30, for our sanity, not theirs.
Then I'll yell at them any time I see their lights on after about 9:30,
    they're both bookworms too : )

How is it that Grandmothers do that? My mother was a wonderful mother
herself - superb at getting her own children to behave (but I know how she
did that, she had a wooden spoon and wasn't afraid to wave it
meaningfully), but she was even better at, seemingly effortlessly,
teaching the only grandson she got to know, how to behave. She cared for
my nephew when he was little for 2 - 3 days a week, and I know she didn't
have to use the quick swat on the [censored] with him. I profoundly wish she'd
lived longer to be more of an influence on him and on her other two
grandsons. It would have been wonderful for them and she would have adored
    each of them.

I can't criticize how parents manage their children, because when I care
for my nephews the only ground rule I adhere to is that we're not going to
do *anything* that could result in Auntie Martha having to dial 911. But I
have seen and I'm truly in awe of the women who manage this as if it were
the most obvious thing in the world.

What with one thing and another, I think I need to do straight Induction
again. Can anyone please point me to that useful page with The Rules on
    it?

    Meat, fish, oil, unlimited, right?

Eggs, shellfish, green leafy veg, count the carbs, and keep it under 20,
    right?

No fruit, nuts, dairy (?) yes?

    Drink water, take supplements, ok.

    Have I forgotten anything?

Don't bother to tell me to count the carbs in coffee/tea because I never
    touch them.

Confused, actually. I'm still colder than everyone else - just looking round
the family, I'm the only one in thick socks and a jumper - and I'm still
getting the occasional irresisible urge to take a mid-day nap. OTOH, I'm
fairly sure my brain is functioning on all cylinders, which is fantastic -
it was so scary to realise quite how much cognitive function I'd lost.

I'm going to see the quack next week on a "give me test strips or else"
mission; if that goes well, I might ask him whether upping the thyroxine a
tad more is a good idea. I'm very wary about overdosing, though - check some
of Julie Bove's posts for the unpleasant consequences of that! Otherwise,
I'd be reasonably happy to let things ride at their current level for a few
more weeks, to see if things improve with time - after all, my body's been
putting up with not enough T4 for so long, it might not have noticed yet
    that things have changed!

Heh. It's not usually as bad as I painted it. It's just that recently
she's been having the most awful separation anxiety and seems to want to
be glued to me most of the time - except when all of a sudden she turns
back into her normal independent self and pushes me away.

<g> Yep - lil' Froggie is almost 2 and it shows! I understand, Bint.
Both my girls were pretty independent, but they both went through this
somewhere between 18 months and 3. The good thing is that it doesn't
    last!

    Quoted message said:

I decided early on that I wouldn't make her suffer if she had separation
anxiety, I would run with it and let her be with me if she needed to.
It makes no sense to me to force a child who is already fearful to go
without the one person she needs. And in truth I don't find it too
hard; at least I'm getting lots of cuddles at the moment. She's usually
    a very independent little miss.

I can see your point. Sometimes I HAD to force my girls to go without
me for a bit, simply because it was either have them a little
distressed by Mummy going away or being a LOT distressed by Mummy
having a major meltdown and either collapsing in sobs (happened
occasionally) or screaming at them (usually I managed to get outside
and do my screaming there). However, mostly I coped, as I'm guessing
you cope, simply because there wasn't another option.

    Quoted message said:

Yes, I do do housework around her; I have to. There's no other way to
manage. But there's always plenty that needs doing come evening.

<Nodding> Yeppers, know the feeling well. Will Froggie let you read
if you're reading aloud? My girls got all kinds of odd reading simply
because if I was reading aloud (with LOTS of expression) they didn't
care what it was. They heard a lot of the old (yellow paperback)
Atkins simply because that was the only way I could get through it
when I started reading it. They were entranced by the vocal changes I
put into it even when the 'story' didn't make much sense to them.
They were two and three at the time.

Of course, maybe it soaked in deeper than I realised - they do tend to
eat LC without even thinking about it.

I try. But anything I read, she snatches and runs off with after the

I was actually really looking forward to reading with her, not least
because it would be a chance to sit down for a wee while, but it's a
    long time coming.

So does Froggie! For instance, I give her cheese on toast, and she
picks the cheese off, and ignores the toast. She's got awesome eating
habits - loves her fruit, goes mad for mixed veg, scoffs meat & fish
dishes happily, and can't be arsed bothering with bread or potatoes or
rice cakes. I really hope she'll keep it up - with my genes, the last
thing she needs is to develop a taste for the carbs.

    Nicky.

I have a suggestion on the room thing, from the POV of a formerly messy
child. My parents let me have my room as messy as I wanted as a teenager,
with a couple of rules. No food in my room. The mess could not spread to
other rooms of the house. I had to do my own laundry. Eventually, around
15 or so, I started keeping it tidy on my own. Since my parents had a
hands-off attitude towards it, I felt like it was "my" room, and when it
was clean I took pride in it, because it was entirely within my power
whether it was clean or not.
