So there I was, peacefully stopped at the traffic lights southbound on
Shoreditch High Street. Coming north up Shoreditch High Street is one of
Her Majesty's Vauxhall Astras. Blue lights on, but no siren. Coming east
out of Holywell Lane is a Peugeot 306. It is clearly not being driven by
Superman, as the driver is unable to see the rapidly approaching dibbles due
to the presence of an irritatingly opaque building.

There is a collective sharp intake of breath among the cyclists and
motorcyclists gathered in the ASL area, coz we can see exactly what is about
to happen. Peugeot makes contact with Astra's nearside rear wing. Astra is
very soon umop-ap!sdn, heading in our direction and shedding bits for which
it has no further use. Fortunately it bounced off a convenient piece of
road furniture, but one of its wheels was heading in my direction with
alarming despatch. This, kids, is why it's a good idea to change down into
a low gear when stopped at the lights. Fear, as the poet sang, lent him
wings, and I took off at a rate that would have left Senor Alonso's company
    car looking rather second-rate.

Don't know if anyone was KSI or hit by flying motorcar parts, but I think I
    need a drink...

This is a mere stone's throw from my office. <waves>

Cycling content: I rode from there to East Finchley and back home to
Wapping last night. As predicted, didn't get all the way up Highgate
Hill without walking some, and the rain wasn't much fun either. Got
home in about 50 minutes - this was much more enjoyable. Took it easy
on way to work this morning as I don't want my thighs to break.

Bloody cyclists ignoring red traffic lights again ;-)

    Glad you got away unharmed.

Blood hell, Dave! I think I would too. Glad you eventually made it to
the Nut Mines in one piece. Have you phoned in your name as a witness
to the opacity of the building and the non-nee-nering nature of the car
that nearly ended in your lap?

The irony is he would have been safer if he had been.

If he did that then the police would undoubtedly persecute him for
    being "anti-police".

However, I gather all Metropolitan Police cars are now fitted with
data recorders which record such things.

I will always explain revoked keys, unless the UK government
prevents me by using the RIP Act 2000.

What, the names of passing witnesses? That's one helluvanimpressive

It's those new ID cards; all passing police vehicles will log the
details of all persons enjoying the freedom of the street by RFID.

Flippin' 'eck - not quite as amusing as your normal posts. From the
picture it looks like it could have been a *lot* worse; i.e. ploughing
    through peds.

So, er, where did you get the photo? Are you some sort of Secret Agent
with access to the nation's spy satellites...? Of course if you say
"no" I shall assume that you are, and if "yes" I'll assume it's a
    double-bluff.

There were probably half a dozen cyclists and motorcyclists in the ASL area
    too.

Charles Clarke sent it to me... Actually, TWFKAML found a thread on the
urban75 forum wossname, just after I'd posted the story elsewhere, in a
small corner of the InterWeb where we both lurk. The photo was snapped by
one "tendril" out of his / her window.

And subsequently will be able to nick those who do the most passing and
repassing under the computer misuse act (wasting bandwidth).

If I can marry two threads (kinky !) - there are some (see Regents'
Park thread) who would have had Dave hung, drawn and cauterised for
'breaking the rules'. Now what was that about a civilised society not
applying all of the rules all of the time ... ?

Yes, but only what Teflon Tone's working towards with his ID card
racket. I feel they should use the ideas from the Book of Revelations,
and have everyone branded in their right palm or on their forehead - a
national bar-caode would do it ...

Of course, bar codes come in three groups of six lines each ....

There is, of course, a difference between breaking the rules for your
convenience and breaking them to stay alive and intact. I suppose you could
say that it would be rather inconvenient to be killed by flying bits of
    automobile...

The law does allow mitigating circumstances amongst which saving your
life is pretty high on the list and wanting to save a few seconds on a
    journey is pretty low.

This I realise, but I was attempting to contrast this life-saving
behaviour with the dictates of those who stated that rules should
    never be broken.
